They won't make the playoffs, but there's hope for modest success in the future.

It would seem that the return of Cito Gaston has meant the return of someone with an understanding of the sport of baseball. The Jays actually run every now and then, and there's a sense of order in the lineup. Since J.P. Ricchardi took over, the team has seen a list of managers fail under J.P.'s idiotic "moneyball" approach. Cito must have insisted on running things his way, and lo and behold...the Jays are competitive again - even without the majority of their starting staff.

I don't know when the Jays (or anyone else) will win the division again. There's still nothing in place to keep the Yankees and Red Sox from buying their success, so there's no reason to believe that those two teams won't stay on top of the AL East.

And for those who like to use the Rays' success last year to "prove" that money doesn't win anything, take a look at Tampa Bay this season. They were a flash in the pan. How long before they lose Longoria or Kazmir to one of the big spenders? For the Jays, the loss of Halladay will be either at the end of this season, or at best next year.

Last year they had the best bull pen in baseball. That hasn't changed.

After Cito returned they played .580 ball. That would have put them 1 game behind Boston for the Wild card if they had that record all season.

A healthy AAron Hill over a Joe Inglett will give them an extra game or two. As will the combo of Travis Snider and Adam Lind over Frank Thomas and Matt Stairs.

The starting pitching still has Doc and Jesse. Romero has looked good, Richmond hasn't faltered, and Purcey has shown signs of brilliance.

Marcum, McGowan and Janssen are due back sometime this year.

All in all I like their chances.

Their playing good. Even with a patchwork rotation. This isn't our year but it is to get playing time to all the young guys for the 2010 season. I still believe they can make the play offs though. With the play of all the other AL East teams (Yankees, Rays and Orioles). Looks like they have a shot. They say the April games don't count but every one you win in April is one less one you need in September. Which if Jays started this well last year they would have won the Wild Card.

Their offense happens to be playing well for the first time in 10 years. But after Halladay the rotation looks like a AA team. They wont last the summer, its impossible. Guys like Marco Scutato, and Adam Lind who are currently hitting .300-.340, are going to finish around .240-.270.

    I dunno...

With both Scott Rolen and Travis Snider on My fantasy team I have to hope they do well. Plus I'm thoroughly tired of seeing the BoSox and Yankees dominate the AL East. It'd be a pleasure to see the Rays or Jays pick up that pennant this year to me.

I think they're definitely playing above their ability. When they get swept by the Royals this series then maybe their fans will calm down a bit.

  • 1 decade ago

Yes. They haven't even played ANY teams from the AL East. That's why they're tied for first now (not for long)

hahah they wont win AL east..i doubt it..but they could give it a good run if halladay has a good year

I don't see them staying there, the divsion is much too competitive for them.
