Temporary census workers are doing that all across America. They are collecting all addresses where there is a dwelling of any sort. In Clark County, Nevada, during the 2000 Federal Census, 50,000 households were left off the census mailing lists. We weren't told why, but in Nevada, that could have led to an additional seat in the US House of Representatives. The science of mapping is a highly technical industry, and the accuracy of maps is important for cell phone users, police and fire departments, etc. (Homeland Security, also.)

Your address may have been the only one missing in their database. ALL census data is completely confidential for 72 years. Up until actual censuses are released, those numbers are only used to calculate House redistricting, and National budget priorities for all kinds of programs, like public school funding, money for poverty programs, elderly and disabled programs, and public infrastructure like roads and highways, etc.

You will get a form in the mail next April 1st. Fill it out completely, and mail it in. If you don't, someone will come around to visit you after 30 days, and will keep coming back until they find you. Since the census is TOTALLY confidential, no need to be paranoid. This is the way the federal government allocates all federal monies destined for local communities.

I had to get an FBI background check amd fingerprinting in order to do this for just two weeks...

are you a resident alien or living in a multi unit dwelling. Possible on a corner ? Did he supply you with any ID. GPS is triangulation from satellites overhead. Short of scanning A US Postal Service bar code on a multi unit box. His statement sounds a tad questionable. Try this link for the regional office in your area if you want to see if they actual had some one in your neighborhood

Or maybe it was for Google maps.

The Census Bureau is sending people through neighborhoods now to make sure their address lists are correct.

Yes, they did go to other houses on your street.
