What would make even the vilest of tyrants conscript girls as young as 11 to fight a war?
LONDON: Tamil Tiger rebels, cornered in a small stretch of land in Sri Lanka, are conscripting children, including girls as young as 11, to fight the island nation’s army, senior army officers have claimed.
“It’s like looking at your own child. Quite large numbers of the dead are under 16. They grab them from their parents and they try to pull them back they get shot. These children have the dog tags and cyanide capsules.
“The younger children (captured) go for rehabilitation programme,” Brig Priyantha, who commands an artillery division in the north, told British newspaper the Daily Telegraph. Agreed his colleague, an officer who identified himself as “Roan”: “Considerable numbers of the dead (are) child soldiers. The youngest was around 12.”
At Puthumatalan Lagoon, the edge of the no-fire zone, where thousands of civilians have escaped heavy fighting last month, Major-General Jaggath Dias, General Officer Commanding of 57th Division, also said his men were fighting with girls.
He said some of those his men had captured had their hair cut short to shame them for trying to run away from the front line.
“Girls as young as eleven. Our soldiers have seen them on the front line. It’s very difficult to shoot a child. But it does not matter what age, you have to shoot,” the British newspaper quoted the senior army officer as saying.

Running the risks of TDs- pff- Militarily it makes great sense. Imagine if I was your armed enemy- you would shoot me in an instant without any thought as soon as you saw me if you had the opportunity.
Now, imagine that I had a young girl in front of me- a shield so to speak. Would you then react so quickly, or would your hesitation give me the opportunity, that split second advantage, needed to kill you?
Yes, I 110% agree with your use of "vilest", but Man is not really top of the Food Chain are we? The question should be about the morality and ethics of war, if there actually is such a thing!

As someone said desperation and commitment. The Tamil Tigers are a bunch of criminals, only outstripped in their depravity by the Sri Lankan government whose policies over the decades have made any ideas of a moderate Tamil independence movement completely ridiculous. Please do maintain your interest in this story, the Tamils are being marched into camps and heaven only knows what's going to be done to them there.

Just like with those in prison while in theory it is a great idea...I think they would be really difficult to manage. So much of being a soldier is about loving America I am not sure these guys would make good soldiers. But In theory, great idea.

Somewhere out in the Cosmos is a creature that is light years ahead of us.
They may be reading or listening to our news via planetary leakage of radio signals.
How will they judge us, will they visit us and just dust the planet so that we all die.
Who would blame them.
The cosmos is too clean to run the risk of our filth polluting it.

Israel has been shooting kids as a terror tactic for years, but OK conscripting kids is equally horrific. The difference is that Israel with media-mind control can change history to suit Israel and lie a way out of it.

No different than Hamas using children as human shields.
But if those kids have guns, grenades, knives, or some other weapon, you have the right to defend yourself against them.
And I guess utilizing kids in war would mess with one's psyche.
You would want to avoid killing them if possible.
However, those kids were brainwashed into killing machines, or quiet possibly their families were threatened.
