Is ADD/ADHD over diagnosed?

Personally I think it is. Parents don't want to deal with their kids and neither do teachers. So they label a kid ADD/ADHD and medicate them. What is your opinion?

Yes I do think it is over diagnosed. However, many parents are in a sticky situation if they do not medicate their children. If the school feels that the child is being neglected by not getting medicated then they contact Department of Child Services to step in. Parents are then forced to put their child on meds or lose their child, it is also a big thing when parents are divorced and do not agree on how to handle the situation causing a loss of true parental guidance due to the one parent can over power the other with a threat of losing the child if not medicated. Personally, I have noticed that many children who are considered poverty level and/or come from broken homes are more app to this. I think a part of this is a lack of the ability to afford getting the child involved in extra curricular activites...their energy is bottled up if you will. I also feel If a child is forced to visit a not so good environment or children are constantly exposed to bickering back and forth being used to get at the other parent, or one of the parents abandon the child...the child is going to act out. Unfortunately the judicial system seems to be more set on securing their future by allowing kids to be exposed to these poor situations...it ensures future criminals. It is probably more known in the poverty area due to single parents being too busy trying to make it financially that their child is not getting the positive attention and guidance that they need...in part you could possibly blame Family Social Services Association...when single parents are urged and threatened to lose benefits if they do not put a job(s) above their child. The government has their noses so far up a poverty level family's a** that it is difficult to parent by what the parent sees fit, and the government not step in. But then again you are asking that the government to step in, by stopping an unfit parent, unfit environments, it also puts fear in some that they don't discipline their child as needed. Thin lines to walk.
