US Navy Turbine Technician Versus Philippine Naval Personnel (Midshipman)... which one is considered better?

Alright, here's the details.

As the US navy knows, a GSM is a turbine technician (mechanical) and is an individual that looks/fixes/maintains gas turbines.

However, Prior from bootcamp and before going to A-school.

All "US" navy personnel had completed the Course in the boot camp with shipboard damage control and firefighting (which my recruiter told me that I will have it as a badge for my skill) and weapons firing.

Back to being a GSM; my recruiter said they would be part of the so-called "SNIPE" team--(They say it's super naturally intelligent propulsion engineer while others say it's from the name of John Snipes, the guy that demanded more privilege for the steam engineers.)

Their advancement is measured with their earned skills being tested and allotted time spent on land/shore duty. They are however, trained (and usually) after Highschool.

As to being a navy personnel and also a GSM; they are backed by the words HONOR, COURAGE and COMMITMENT and most of all...

Being part of the worlds most powerful Navy and its Pride...

The United States Navy.

Now with the Challenger.

Having a "Philippine" Naval Personnel (Midshipman); his details comprises skills about command management and navigation.

Though it is, However, the lowest rank on the navigation department...

They are still considered officers and have essential skills regarding seamanship and navigation as well as it is a course in college (based in the Philippines).

Their advancement is measured based on the skills they would gain while on duty (apprenticeship and study).

However, the Philippine Navy's power is not as large and technologically advanced as the US Navy.

They are backed by the values of honor, dedication, patriotism, solidarity, leadership and professionalism.

My question is:

If both personnel will have a debate on which one is advanced or better;

who would it be and why?

Everything here is unbiased.

Thanks for the answers.

Update:

Oh I forgot something,

this question is supposed to be like a debate say which one is better when you met "that" person say on a "Reunion".

I'll be frank, and hope please don't feel bad but...

This would be like "Who would have more success than the other?"

haha.

Benji, I would be careful then. Lol :D

Have to agree with Benji... neither is better, their jobs and responsibilities are distinctly different. BOTH will get my respect for serving... either Navy.

I served 15 years in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club (USN) and like Benji: NEVER met a Filippino sailor in the USN who didn't bust his @ss and show exceptional professionalism. Two of my "favorites" Senior Chief Legaspi and Chief "Dupee" from helicopter deployments on Frigates & Cruisers.

For the last 5 years I spend half my time living in Mindanao and deal with the Philippine Marines and Navy since I live sea-side, and THEY are also terrific troops and always give THIS old retired LCDR respect (and thankfully a close eye given Abu Sayeaf and MILF).

Another point... when I was an AW2, my little brother was a Midshipman, USNR. And his NROTC cadre had trained THEM well in the sense that "you're mids, and PO1s & PO2s will have more knowledge than you when you're commissioned... listen, learn, and lead." I picked up MY commission 2 years after my brother.

I DO laugh at the Manila-Mafia comment... I remember one cruise we had a bad-spare engine for our SH-60B, and no spare for the spare. "Official" Supply sources said it would take a MONTH to get us a new engine. Chief Dupee and the members of the PI-Mafia sent a few messages out, and "PRESTO" on our next UNREP, there was not one, but TWO brand new General Electric T700-GE-401C turboshaft engines. ONE from Japan and "reserved" for the use of VMX-1 for "Marine ONE".

Yeppers, never piss off a member of the Manila Mafia or you'll find yourself a Galley-Captain on Diego Garcia !!

Neither is 'better' than the other. You're comparing apples and oranges.

If we define 'better' as a function of rank, you are enlisted, he is considered an officer, you would salute him.

Better watch out or the Manila Mafia is going to hunt you down and send your service records to Adak, Alaska!

Source(s): USN ret. 1979-2000 - and I never met a Phillipino who wasn't hard-working, professional, and motivated. The best recruit company I ever had in two tours as a Navy DI (RCC) was composed of almost 70% Phillipinos.
