Which NHL team has the farthest reaching fan base?

I went to the Ducks/Wings game at the Pond - Yes, I will forever call it the Pond - and was amazed by the number of Wings fans and their level of enthusiasm. As the game was winding down, their chant of "Oz-zie, Oz-zie" drowned out the hometown Duckies doing their own yelling.

Couple of notes...

1) I'm not a Wings or Ducks fan so I have no bias in my observation. 2) This cannot be written off as a SoCal phenomena where there are no "real hockey fans". Whenever and wherever I've seen the Wings on the road (in 8 buildings outside of the Joe), there fans are out in droves.

So, what do you all think? Which team has the broadest reach of true-blue fans?

It is absolutely the Canadiens overall. The Red Wings are certainly the most widespread American team.....all those displace Michigan autoworkers I guess. LOL

I don't think there is a real large fanbase outside of Canada/USA (There is more to North America than those two countries...Mexico...the Caribbean Islands etc) but the correct answer would probably be the Toronto Maple Leafs. Don't you people even know your continents? The Habs would have a broad fan base as well......they might even have a few extra fans in Europe because I believe their owner (George Gillette) is half owner of ManU. Could be wrong.

I was suprised to hear the announcers on Versus saying "and the Detroit fans are cheering "Ozzie" and "Go Wings"" because they were out in California but it also made me smile.

I don't know for sure which team actually has the farthest reaching fan base, but hopefully not to sound TOO biased, I would believe that the Red Wings are at least one of the teams with fans from all over. Heck, I live in Maryland and I absolutely love the Wings!

I agree with Detroit, put Buffalo in there as well since half the population has moved away to warm cities with NHL teams. Toronto and Montreal also draw a large number of fans for road games.

For the least(I know you didn't ask), I always thought it was surprising that Minnesota has a great fan base, but I never see more than a few Wild fans when their team is on the road.

Over the years that i've watched hockey, I have seen good road support for teams such as the Wings, Rangers, Leafs, Canadiens, Flyers, and more recently the Pens. So i can't pick one team out as having the farthest reaching fan base, but it would be a toss up between those teams.

I have to agree...I am a Wings fan but in all seriousness they seem to have a large amount of fans at nearly every building when they are on the road. Personally I travel to Chicago on occasion and it is amazing how many bus loads I see full of Wings fans. Also I have been to places like Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis and every year I spend plenty of time in Florida where I do my best to see a game in at least one of those cities. And nearly every one of those cities literally end up with around 1,000 WIngs fans whenever I am there. I also note in particular when I am in Florida the amount of Maple Leafs jerseys I see and also whenever I see any away game with them.

It is definitely the Habs. Only the Leafs come close...but not really. Montréal have fans everywhere they go (except Philadelphia).

For American teams probably Detroit. They're an old team that has been very good for a long time.

I went to a ducks sabres game earlier this year and the building always went crazy when buffalo scored. It was ****** weird lol. But yeah its gotta be detroit, that happens all the time for them no matter what arena they play in

I'd say either Montreal or Detroit. You see Detroit fans in large numbers wherever the play.

Habs for sure! Xmas break 97 I was in Mexico for my brother's wedding, took a day trip to Molte Alban, spotted a lady wearing a Canadiens tshirt. She didn't speak french but knew Rocket, Lafleur, Beliveau, Roy + Koivu.. to this day I wonder why I didn't propose on the spot !!
