LCD is better especially for gaming.LCDs come with thinner set,not burn-in,less problem, less power consumption and last longer.
1080p is a good resolution.I would suggest new Samsung 2009 model that have high dynamic contrast ratio, great picture quality.

Plasma is actually better.
LCD suffers "Motion Blur" and was hated by gamers when they started to appear on computers because you could not watch fast motion. Newer LCDs reduce the problem by drawing the screen twice as often (the "120 hz") but the motion blur is still visible.
LCD are also not truly black but 'grey' and this means you do not get the dark, realistic images that a CRT or plasma or DLP can give you. So to compensate for this shortcoming, the higher end LCD's have variable blacklight. On large areas of the screen that are black, the light behind this area is turned off to make the 'grey' LCD look black.
It works - but it's another attempt to make up for the problems of LCD.
LCD's are much cheaper to make and lighter so shipping is cheaper. This is why companies are discontinuing plasmas.
But the best picture quality has been plasma for several years.

Plasma is out
just buy a good cost effective lcd. most are close
1080 is not exactly pixels, more number of lines actually
major makers are very few big names. others just integrate and brand the panels
