Where can I find information on safely altering my home electronics with soldering, etc.?

I have a cheap alarm clock that I would like to use to power other components instead of the internal speaker. Where can I find information online on how to identify which components I need to remove, replace, or alter?

I'm trying to hook up a small driver for ElectroLuminescent lights to my alarm clock so that lights flash instead of the radio turning on.

Update:

Thanks Doug, that's exactly what I was looking for... Would you tell your kid that?

You probably can't find that information. And what you're trying to do will require a bit of design work that I'm guessing would be a bit out of your league.
