Do they have to pull out your teeth for braces?
Do they have to or is it optional? I am getting braces soon and I don't want them to pull my teeth out.
Thx Babygurl82. I have straight teeth already. The only reason I need braces is because I have an underbite which I want to fix it.

It depends on the current position of your teeth. I had to get 4 teeth removed before getting braces becuase I looked like a vampire =]. My canine teeth on top and on bottom were above my line of teeth on top and on the bottom they were below. Subsequently I had to get the four teeth located behind each of my canine teeth removed. If your teeth are just crooked and they all have space to grow then no you do not need to get them pulled. They only pull your teeth before braces if there is not enough space in your mouth for each tooth such as in my case. If your teeth are growing well enough to have them be straight and have space without messing up anything then no you won't need teeth pulled. By that I mena if everything is basically in one line. Like if there are teeth ebhind teeth or above or under tehn yes you need to get tehm pulled before getting braces or the braces will make them worse. If your teeth are all on one line but just crooked then no teeth need to be removed. (My aunt's a dentist and my uncle is an orthodontist so yeah I went through so amny days of learning about teeth with my cousins =]). Hope I helped you and good luck with braces! I jsut got mine off and if you could see a before and after pic you'd be amazed! Anyways you won't need teeth pulled unless the teeth don't have enough space to grow.

I got my teeth pulled before I got my braces, but my friend just lost a tooth the other day and she has braces. So I guess it just depends on what your orthodontist thinks is best to do for you and how they want to take care of your teeth as an individual. And don't worry, if you do end up having to get your teeth pulled-if you have a good dentist- it should be pretty easy, so don't get worked up about it if it comes down to that.

There are two basic kinds of arch wire used in braces. One is rigid and the other is flexible. Either one is formed into the "ideal" arch form for the patient. The brackets are put on the teeth in such a position that once the teeth are drawn to the arch wire by elastics, they will be in proper alignment. The orthodontist may not be able to start out with the "final" arch wire and will have to use a few intermediate arch wires to accomplish the desired movement in stages. The flexible wires don't work too different from the rigid wires, but they have memory of their original shape and will help provide some of the active force required to move the teeth, so you may not need as many arch wire changes.

SOMETIMES, it is nessesary or better to take a tooth or opposing teeth out for orthodontic treatment. If your jaw is especially small and it is unreasonable to fit all your teeth in the arch in a couple years, you can get a tooth pulled.
But it doesn't happen to everyone who gets braces, it just is nessesary for some people! So talk to your ortho and tell him that you don't want any teeth out if he advises it, see what he says about your situation.
Source(s): I've had braces and tons of other dental treatments and had to get some teeth out for orthodontics. Don't worry, right now I am down to 25 teeth and my mouth is still good! You don't actually need all 32 or 28 teeth, and fewer in a better arangement is actually better than more packed into your mouth :) - 1 decade ago
Not always. They pulled out a tooth for me but most people I see don't have their teeth taken out. It depends on what your orthodontist says.

if they pull your teeth out then braces would be worthless... think about it and get back to me.

They wouldnt pull a tooth out any way, unless it was rotten.
