What is the difference between a hardware firewall and a software firewall? Which one do big business use for security?

I am using Verizon FIOS for internet and I have the verizon router set up in my bedroom. I can get wifi almost anywhere in my house except my living room, the farthest place away from the router.

Does anyone know which router is good enough for me to get signal in my living room?
