Who is right? My mom say that I should pay for my own food and wash stuff even though i still live at home?
I'm 19 and I've been out of H.S. for 3 years. I work as a draughtsman for my dad which means the pay isn't good. She insists that I buy my own food (milk, cereal, fruits sadas' juice etc). I have been buying everything that i own from i was 14. I've paid for school trips, prom, clothing, games, glasses you name. I just bought a trumpet book for 40 bucks and she complained that I 'wasted' my money. Is she going far. Or is she right? My dad who knows my financial situation says nothing
I hope to get a scholarship to go to college in Jan. so it's not like i plan to freeload off them forever.
I figure i do pay rent. If my dad had to hire someone else to do my job he would actually have to pay them a lot more than I make. Which would hurt everybody.

I lived with my dad until I was at least 22 and he made me pay for the groceries and help out around the house. I don't think it's unreasonable. If your parents don't have a lot of money to be throwing around then I can see why they would ask you to pay for games, clothing, and other random items. My dad didn't have a ton of money to be tossing everywhere so I paid for whatever I wanted. It's a good way to treat your belongings with care and respect because you had to pay for it.

Before I moved out of the house ( and after I had to unfortunately move back) I helped around the house with the chores and buying my own food. After I lost my apartment, I help do whatever I could do around the house. As for the food, we had an extra refridgerator that I used for myself because I have a much bigger appetite. For the family, they had muscles back in the house (i'm a weightlifter), so things could be done. Rent was paid with work because my income was next to zero. Just make sure that you keeps your parents updated on your goals. I keep my parents updated on my progress to move back out.

you should help with chores around the house now that you're an adult. you should also be allowed to buy things with your own money. if you can reach a compromise, you should help your mom out with bills. your rent seems to be part of your salary, so either get another job and move out or sit down with both parents and work out an agreement.

After our children graduate, we charge $50 a week and they take care of their own laundry, etc. and follow a chore list. Good luck..

Your mother is right. YOU are an adult, your parents are no longer obligated to support your financially, they can actually tell you to get out of their house and if you don't leave they CAN have the police escort you out.
