How is that not an abuse of power?
The WH is telling California that they can't balance their budget by cutting state employees salaries unless they are willing to forfeit stimulus money. Could it be that the stimulus bill is more about power and control than about economics?

The government has been using the spend clause of Article I to force states to do things for years. For instance, why is the drinking age 21? Its not because the states wanted it, but because the feds wanted it. How did they get around that pesky 21st amendment that said the feds can't regulate alcohol? They said that states that have a drinking age below 21 lose 5% of their highway money.
I agree with you that this stimulus package is about power, but its not a new power grab,and its not a power grab isolated to one president or one party, but to the federal government generally.

I'm going along the lines of fellow responder JB. The Federal Government can influence the states by withholding money until they do what the Fed wants. Some may remember the 55 MPH speed limit and those that did not comply did not get Federal Matching funds for road and highway construction and repair. It's an arm twisting tool but really I think they are looking out for state jobs in the process and anyone remember where Nancy Pelosi is from ? Since 1987, she has represented the 8th Congressional District of California, which consists of four-fifths of the City and County of San Francisco???
I used to think Dick Cheney was running the country.

Where was your outrage when the Fed held up highway money to states to force them to raise the drinking age and then lower the speed limits? This is nothing new from the federal government. Of course the way out is to have a state be efficient enough to not need to take their money.

The public employees unions made massive donations to Obama's campaign funds, as well as to those of most other left wing liberal democrats. Now it's pay-back time.
The liberals are going to make sure that the recession hurts everyone EXCEPT their paymasters in the government unions.
