In the new Star Trek, why does Kirk spend the movie getting his butt kicked?
In the original series, Kirk would usually wind up fighting aliens who always seem to by physically superior, but he would find a way to win. In this new movie, Kirk gets his butt kicked, and often badly, throughout the whole movie. Why couldn't he win one fight.
In addition, Kirk goes for Uhura, early in the movie, and then later on in the movie she literally throws herself at Spock. It seems somebody was trying to send a message. This part of the movie, in my opinion, was where they failed to stay with character. Spock had already shown plenty of emotion, they didn't need to emphasize this any more. This new love interest twist will most likely cause problems with any future stories.

I think the movies plays on the fact that Kirk is a sympathetic underdog type. A scrapper who doesn't know what losing is all about although he does end up on the short end of the stick most of the time. I was thinking the same thing while watching the movie.
Obviously the Spock, Uhura thing was new to all of us. Again, this is supposed to be the untold story via the era between Pike and Kirk and the Enterprise.
You have to remember, this future might not be the original future the the TV series was all about. The planet Vulcan is gone and there are, in fact, two Spocks! It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I thought the movie was outstanding!

That's because this is a new movie with a gay dude playing Kirk.
No one can replace William Shatner as Kirk. Shatner WAS KIRK!
