Should I become a teacher?

I've tried so many jobs over the years and hated them all. They were all pretty lame and required no higher education qualifications whatsoever. I have a degree and a masters degree and am now considering doing a PGCE (teaching qualification) and becoming a teacher.

I hated school and the only thing that made it bearable was a few cool teachers. I'd quite like to be one of those cool teachers but I'm not sure I could hack all the red tape.

What do other people think, just generally, about teaching?

I'm also considering teaching, it's fairly decent pay, good holiday's and plenty of benefits. A couple of major factors that would turn most people off would be the education required to become a teacher, which you've already got and secondly whether or not you can put up with children.

So overall it appears to be an excellent profession, good luck with your decision.

People need to tell you the reality of being a cool teacher!

There are a lot of cool teachers out there! That as it is, the students as a group really are not swayed.

You cannot please everyone! Remember that!

Why do you want to be a teacher?

This is a serious question because the pay is worse than a babysitter's pay, and you'll find that you are not only babysitting, but that your hands are also tied when you find "problem" students.

The teacher that kids will remember twenty years from now, are not the teachers that the kids get along with now, but the teachers that were strict with love. It is also this kind of teacher that will teach the most to the students, and that will reach the most difficult of students.

Students complain about their rights now because they are used to society taking care of them, but they are ill prepared to go out into the real world when they turn 20!

Think seriously about whether you want to deal with parents

Deal with administration that treat you like you are not a professional

Do it for a low wage

and have very little time to yourself because even when you are at home, for the first three years, teachers are working almost 20 hours a day!

Consider all of this, and if you still want to make a difference in a child's life, then YES you were meant to be a teacher!

No matter how old you are, the careers centre is still a good place to go and seek advice.

There are talks and presentations made by actual teachers who seem to be the best people to talk to about anything such as 'red tape' and just the vocation as a whole.

You seem to be really interested in this career and that is all that matters. Some people will consider filling in forms etc as tiring, whilst you may find that you came from jobs which only had that and so a little form filling balanced with a great practical skill may not seem such a bad deal.

    Good luck.

You can be a teacher. There are some general tips for you-

1.Try to teach the students in the easy way i.e. give examples related

from the daily life of students.

2.Always try to entertain the children by telling some jokes. In this way

you also will like to teach the children and not hate this job like others

3.Organize some activities periodically like competitions, story telling

    etc.

And the most important thing do not give the students much homework as by this the students get bored and hate studies.

  • That sounds like a great idea!

I heard that being a teacher is great. But not when it comes to grading papers.

Teaching is probably a joy to most, a pain for some. But in my case, I think teaching is a joy! The feeling of happiness washes over you if you finally succeed in teaching someone something! Its so cool when you see children having an "Ah-ha!" moment.

    Good Luck!

It isn't the best paying job but it is very rewarding. My sister is a teacher and she loves it. You make such a huge difference in children's lives whether you realize it or not. I can remember all my teachers back to kindergarten and the ones that were really cool, I will remember forever. You can change someone's (or many people's) lives as a teacher. if it is something you think you can handle (you have to have patience) then you should do it.
