no, rice will not help your dog gain weight. rice is grain, and normally just a filler. if you want your dog to gain weight try using a food with a higher protein percentage, unless your dog is a giant breed than be careful as you want them to grow slowly and depending on the age don't want to exceed certain amounts. giant breeds should be on large breed puppy food with a protein of about 24%-26%, at 9 months can then switch to adult food as they are now growing into their adult frame.
also, may i ask why? do you think your dog is too skinny? you should be able to feel the dogs ribs through their coat if they are healthy, and standing over them they should have an hour glass shape...just fyi.

No. Rice will not put on weight, only protein and certain fats will do that for a healthy weight gain. If you are feeding your dog twice a day and he is still not putting on the weight needed, there may be an underlying medical problem. A simple blood test should be able to determine what the problem is. Best of luck.

Find a dog food that has higher percentage in protein & fat but just to let you know, the percentage of everything you see right now at the back of your dog food label is actually before it is processed. This is what I heard from another person so not sure if it is true. I give my Golden boiled Salmon everyday. It's is extremely oily & fatty & high in protein. But it's home cooked food, not dry food. But there are commercial foods that ae Salmon. My Dalmatian is now on Addiction Wild Salmon. Her coat is in good condition so is my Golden but fat? No. I'm not giving them enough that's why.

Rice is a complex carb and will not help with weight. It is helpful when dogs are malnourished b/c it's easy for them to digest. You can add an inexpensive canned food to his diet 1/2 can at each feeding or if you can afford it one can /feeding. This will help.

I got a dog from a dogs home once, he'd been very badly neglected and nearly starved to death and the vet at the dogs home had him on a rice diet to help him gain weight.

im trying to do the same for my dog he is pretty small and i want him to gain some weight....
i just recently purchased a product called 'nutri-cal' from petco (or petsmart), which is a high calorie substance you can mix with their food.
i also have been told to give them raw beef tripe.
before actually including anything into their diet though you should feed these things to him, as you would give him a treat...this way you can see if he likes it and will eat it or not.
good luck!
