Fired for working overtime?

If you work part time for a store, and you work over 40 hours a week (and get paid overtime), are they allowed to fire you?

Update:

Didn't happen yet, but it might happen...just making sure what can happen.

    It's called "Employment at will / At will employment". Unless you work in Montana, your employer has the right to terminate your employment for any/no reason. On the otherhand this also gives you the right to quit at any time as well. Unless your employment contract states a specific time frame or you are in an union, your employer can let you go at any time without prior notice. It sounds like you're working very hard and it may seem unfair but you have no defense against it. Good luck

    Many states have a Right to work law which allows an employee or employer to terminate employment for just about any reason.. Were you told not to work overtime or asked to report when you were about to go into overtime if so then yes you can be fired

    First of all where are you from? There are many different places in the world with many different rules and regulations that control workers' rights. In Canada I know that if you work more than 44 hours per week your employer is required to pay you time and a half but it is optional. Unless you agreed to work these hours when you first got the job, you are not required to work overtime...this is why there are workers rights/responsiblities acts.

    If they are the ones scheduling you more hours than you are "supposed" to work, then no, they shouldn't fire you for that. But if they have a policy about how many hours part-time employees are supposed to work and you are going over that by coming in early, taking other people's shifts, etc., then yes, they can fire you for that, although the right thing to do would be to warn you to stop first.

    If you achieved overtime by working more then your allotted hours then yes, but if they scheduled you for overtime then no they can't really do that

    Some places have rules about overtime and whether or not you are allowed to work overtime, if you broke a rule they can fire you

    They probably have rules regarding working overtime. They would rather pay someone else regular pay than you time and a half. If you work unauthorized overtime they can definitely let you go.

    a lot of places have you emplyment "at will" and you may be fired for no reason and the company doesn't have to give a reason...this is the case at a lot of large corporate chains and such such as michael's arts and crafts where we have this rule ...and at Michaels we can be fired for working over time knowingly...or the manager will just be reprimanded

    They can fire you for whatever reason, but logically if they didn't want to pay your overtime they would've told you not to work overtime.

    well you work part time, what are you doing working full time?

    But they shouldnt be allowed, unless there is no need for you to be there that long and your just running the clock. Fired someone last week at my job for that

    Thats not a good reason unless the company is paying too much for the person and it is causing the company financial trouble.

    (And, check your contract you signed when you got the job)
