How to get birds to go away...?

I just moved into the city and I have lots of well established trees in my yard, which is great. However, there are many birds living in these trees and starting at about 4:00 in the morning, they are keeping me from getting some much needed sleep. Is there a way to get them to move on that is safe to use in the city (ie no shotgun ideas here)? If they sounded nice and peaceful that would be fine, but they sound like a bad electronic facsimile of a bird singing. It is quite awful. Any suggestions for me?

City or country, nesting birds are a pain. They are the roosters of urbania. I'm afraid there isn't going to be much you can do. Fake owls, fake hawks...after a while the birds know they are fake, and they are just a place to collect bird poop. This time of year there is an inordinate amount of bird noise -- it will settle down as the season progresses and baby birds leave the nest. It is also jarring after a winter of no bird noise, particularly when it starts at dawn, so you might get used to it after a bit like any unusual noise. I have a Holly outside my bedroom window that is home to a Robin family, and in spring it drives me crazy listening to them and the other birds as they start their noisy days...but I get used to it, and I like having the window open. Birds will return to their homes year after year, as will some offspring so there will always be a natural attraction to the trees; as you said, it is their home.

I can only suggest ear plugs, investing in a feather pillow (oh, the irony) that you can put over your ears in the early morning when they start their racket.

Oh, did I mention they will start making their racket earlier and earlier until the summer solstice? Just what you wanted to hear, I know.

    Good luck. Sweet dreams.

We have a hawk that hunts around the bird feeders in the back yard. When he shows up there isn't a bird to be found anywhere. I suggest maybe a large plastic hawk or two mounted where the other birds can see them.

Oh I had the same thing happen to me. I felt so bad but it was a rare bird and this was in the eighties and I could not replace it even if I could have found that type of bird

Welcome to the real world! Sounds like you have Grackles. Personally I love them, and their strange song.

They are a protected species here in Lubbock, Texas.

If they are Grackles, then maybe you need to go out, and sit and watch them for a while. They are fascinating birds! If you grow to love them for what they are, then their strange song may become music to your ears which lulls you to sleep.

You can't make them move, so you might as well try to find a way to love them.

what i would do is go to the pet or garden store in your area and get a fake owl, it made them go away at my old house but before you do that make sure there aren't any baby birdy nests in the trees cuz u wouldn't want to kill any babys.
