Nascar and the auto industry bailout..?

Does it bother anyone else that GM took all that bailout money, but has not curtailed its Nascar involvement? I haven't heard plans for them to get new sponsors for the races they put on or anything.

Update:

Forgot to mention, I'm a big Kasey Kahne fan. Don't see Dodge spending anything on the guys at RPM.

I'm not sure if you really understand what any this is about, or you wouldn't have asked the question.. GM, and the other manufacturers don't donate money to NASCAR for recreation, they do it for advertising, and to increase their profits by lowering taxes, among other things..

Now why they are allowed to deduct this from their taxes, would be a better question to ask..

If advertising is good for profits, why the tax deduction?? If GM, or any company makes bigger profits by advertising, why does the public need to subsidize it??

First of all big ups for being a Kahne fan... I am too, he's from my hometown in Washington.

I think the reason GM hasnt backed out of anything NASCAR related is because NASCAR is actually making them money right now, one of the few parts of their operation that is actually profitable. With hundreds of thousands of fans at each race track and millions watching on T.V. its definitely a good idea to uphold a strong image of GM with these fans. These are the people that are buying American made autos, and like the old saying goes... Win on Sunday, sell on Monday...

If any of the American auto makes have any kind of a chance in making a come back it will include the fans of NASCAR. This race represents the manufactures of America. Chevy's brand is a corner stone of racing stock cars. If NASCAR is ready to make this race something else it hasn't let it's fans know anything yet.

It didn't seem like Dodge was spending that much on their programs before all of the bailouts.

I don't think any auto company should cut back on NASCAR funding, because just one race brings in hundreds of millions of dollars to that city on race weekend (between food, hotels, traveling, track employee salaries, etc.). So, car companies spending part of their funds on NASCAR goes a long way towards helping the economy.

  • Actually no, it doesn't bother me at all. I'm a bit relieved actually.

I do know that the company's used to buy into contracts for 'Pace Car' rights. This year, the big 3 sat down with Nascar and simply divided up who gets to pace which races and shook hands. No contracts or money was exchanged! Free! Good for Nascar for doing that.

ALL that bail out money really? GM received 17 billion dollars which was a joke compared to the 200 BILLION the banks got with not one question asked. GM just may go bankrupt along with Chrysler do you realize yesterday Chrysler closed 789 dealerships leaving 40,000 to 50,000 folks unemployed? Family owned dealerships for generations and generations, gone. Families that will loose homes, cars and a stable life. Today GM is closing 1,100 dealerships so that is another 50,000 to 70,000 more families without a paycheck and a bleak future. Have you seen the men on TV crying because they don't know if they can support their families anymore? Suicide rate is skyrocketing right now.

So to tell you the truth no I am not upset GM didn't get a new sponsor for NASCAR nor am I upset GM hasn't pulled out of NASCAR, I think NASCAR is darn near their biggest advertiser these days. GM needs NASCAR just like America needs the Auto Industry.

I am more upset with the bank bailouts and the million dollar bonuses they paid their top employees, oh an million dollar office renovations for the CEO at AIG didn't make me to happy either, especially the $38,000 toilet I am now paying for. Oh, and I really liked when AIG treated their best customers to Cabo San Lucas for a weeks vacation ON ME! Auto Industry looking for a life line, AIG handing out vacations. Huge difference.

Not one bit. Car manufacturers spend money in Nascar as marketing and advertising, not to support racing teams. Of course they are going to continue to run their business and part of that IS marketing.

NASCAR ends up making money for General Motors

    General Motors makes the Chevrolet

Chevrolet is the winningest manufacturer in NASCAR

    It doesn't matter
