Teaching dog to bark / be quiet?

Any tips on teaching a dog to bark, and also to be quiet?

Update:

Totally agree - now wish at all to use a shock collar of any sort. Just want to be able to control the barking at anyone / thing that passes the house! Even though I know this is territorial it is also a bit of a nuisance at times. I know he needs to bark at times, but just not as much as he does.

Update 2:

That was meant to be no wish to use shock collar. lol

I agree with the first answer, but when she does speak, give her a treat. To be quiet, say No bark, or actually, you can be creative with that one. A lot of people have different ways of saying it. And don't use a shock collar, I know you said that you won't already, but still I just have to say that. Our neighbors dog got seriously injured on one, please don't!!!

    Hope this helped.

Some places have laws about how long a dog may bark. My dog is a house dog I put him on a runner when he want out if he barks for any reason he comes in side. He has learned to bark once to come in more if someone is in the yard. He is always rewarded either a treat or just good boy. It takes time to teach them when I want him quiet I put my finger to my lips and say shhhh. Then reward when he's quiet.

I didn't teach my dog to speak. But when he barks, like when someone is at the door, I let him bark once or twice and then tell him "thank you". If he's quiet after that I give him a treat and let the person in if its someone at the door. If he keeps barking, no treat or visitor.

One thing you must never do is buy a shock collar!

    Those are HORRIBLE!

You can always tell him to bark and if he does give him a treat and if he doesn't don't give hi a treat, he will eventually cathc on!

And do the same with making him not bark say quiet or something and if he is quiet give him a treat!

Proper training and socialization are some of your dog's most basic needs. Learn how to set a basic foundation before you begin to train your dog https://tr.im/6ljiI

At first, dog training can seem pretty overwhelming, especially if this is your first dog. Truth be told, training your dog is a very big project. However, if you take it step by step, you will find the task to be far less daunting.

    Ehm..

Understanding how to train your dog and how to correct bad behaviours is very important. That's why I suggest to follow a good training course. There are plenty of books and training material. One online course I recommend (I like it because it has hundreds of videos) is http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=572

    It helped me a lot.
