DVD+R is better. It uses ADIP technolgy (Address in Pregroove) which is more reliable at faster speeds (really at any speed fast or slow) than the LPP (Land Pre Pit) technology that DVD-R uses.
DVD+R also has a more complex/effective error mangement system which allows for higher quality and more accurate burning sessions, regardless of the overall quality of the media you are burning.
DVD-R is compatible with more older DVD players seeing as DVD-R was developed in 1997, and DVD+R was released in 2002.
If your DVD burners and players are +R compatible there is no reason to go with -R.
Pioneer developed DVD-R, which was recognized by the DVD Forum as the standard.
A Group called the DVD+RW Alliance developed DVD+R format. This was a group of companies, with Sony being the biggest advocator of the technology (not the lead developer).

It doesn't matter these days. When DVD burners first came out you had to buy the right disc for your brand of burner. (Sony was DVD+R, Panasonic was DVD-R).
They've all been universal for about 4 years now, so it won't matter unless you have an older computer or an old DVD player which you want to use the discs in. If you find that this is the case (ie a disc doesn't work) just use the other format in that case.
