Don't get the .308.
The Weatherby Vanguard SUB-MOA or any Weatherby SUB-MOA. That is probably the most accurate rifle under $1,500.00

Rem 700 in a heavy or stainless steel barrel.
What are you hunting? I like the 338 win mag because of the range and it drops deer and elk like a hammer on a ant.
I shoot long distance because I like it and the open fields and mountain areas sometimes require 700yd shots or more.
Wind will not be as big a factor with a 338vs 308.
Go 338
Accurate is a toss at close range but the 338 wins at long range just ask chuck!

i own two guns that both have been excellent hunters:
first is a 7 millimeter mag rifle. Ive dropped an antelope wanting its hide in the head from 350 yards with a scope
second is the 30-06 N-Field. This gun has a more powerful scope. While sighting it in i put 4 shots in a space the size of a 50 cent piece from 250 yards

I had a Feinwerkbau 300 S pellet rifle that came with a paper target that supposedly shows a 5 shot group, and the hole looks like a single pellet tumbled a wee bit...
As far as the 308 is concerned, if you are lucky you might be able to track down an Armalite AR-30 for less than $1500. It's worth keeping your eyes peeled on Gunbroker!

You should look into a 30 ot 6 or a 270 they are both very good guns when sighted in my fathers winchester 30 ot 6 is dead on at 100 yards
as to the action of the gun thats your own personal preference and i would go with the one that is most all around effiecient for me
a 270 and a 30 ot 6 are both very suitable for deer or black bear and can drop a coyote, but i persosanly would use a different gun for something bigger than an elk

308 caliber:
Springfield M1A rifle starts at $1200
1 MOA or less out of the box, semiautomatic, modern civilian version of military M14 sniper rifle. it is literally the most accurate rifle in .308.

You can pick up a ruger mvIV for about $450 and shoot sub-moa. Well the gun will, whether or not the shooter can is a whole other discussion.
