i need to do something to stop the rain from entering quickly, ideas please?

Ok, this is hard to explain but i'm going to try my best. I live in south florida, and we are entering the rainy season and hurricane season. I have a ground level screened in patio that gets flooded with dirt and rain every time it pours, which is every evening at 4. I can't afford to have it raised at this time, so for now i need a quick fix/simple solution. In front of the patio is a bed of what once was flowers, and was filled in with rocks. Awhile ago i put in a plastic border, similar to what you would use to block off the grass from your woodchips or what ever. It no longer works, as the water goes over that. I need something to keep that water from coming in, it floods my home.

Any idea's, suggestions... something i can buy at home depot or lowes from the garden centers?

I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing flooding down there. I'm in North Florida, and I understand your pain.

You will need to install a sump pump! No amount of plastic sheeting or bordering will hold back the water on peak days, and once it's over the top....it's in!

Lowe's sells a variety of Sump Pumps ranging in price from about $95.00 on the low end, to upwards of $250 on the high end. This will be your most secure way of dealing with this problem immediately, and the most effective short of raising the ground.....and less expensive than the landscaping work.

Go to your local Lowe's and head straight for the Plumbing Department. Let the department manager know about your problem (explain it in detail) and let them walk you through the correct unit to suit your needs.

I'm not sure if I'm picturing the space correctly, but is there any way to lower that rock/flower bed? Since the water is coming over the plastic that was put there, you could lower it, and slant one end down away from your patio so when the bed floods, it drains away from the patio. Or maybe make a little ditch separating the patio from the flower bed that acts as a rain gutter (slanted away from the patio and to either side of the flowerbed). You could also raise the flowerbed on the patio edge and make it more rocky, and lower the side away from the patio and make it more full of soil than rock. The rocks and the incline will help it drain away from the patio. Good luck!

A sump pump is a good ideal, also you could taper your yard back 1''per 4ft to help water run away from your patio. Or put a 2x6 or 2x8 southern yellow pine boarder around the bottom of the patio. Then paint it with a water sealer and clear silicone outdoor type at all the seams and joints to help hold the water back.Use 3'' galvanize screws to hold every thing together. Water is one of worst element for a home hope this is what your looking for good luck.
