Puppy mills supporting my family?!? HELP!!?

I work for a vet clinic who's owner recently signed a contract with a store that sells "designer dogs" that come from puppy mills. A good 80% that come in to our clinic have coccidia or giardia, almost all have upper respiratory issues, and so far 3 have died before even reaching 9 weeks of age due to one illness or another. Puppy mills are an issue that I feel VERY strongly about. I am completely against this whole designer dog fad. Now though, my paycheck is coming from puppy mills (in an indirect way). We can't rely on my husband's business completely with the economy the way it is right now and I'm having trouble finding another job.

What would you do?

Update:

I know that the pups have to go somewhere and that they are getting good care now. My issue is that if people continue to purchase these dogs and the reputable vets in the area care for them, even if they're not promoting the store, where is this going to stop? The vet that I work for has a good reputation. The general public thinks that if we have a contract for the first year of care for the pups being sold, they must be a reputable "store". See what I'm saying? It HAS to end somewhere! These mills are never going to get shut down!

Update 2:

To Animal Artwork, once I'm no longer working there I will gladly give you all the info you like.

    PLEASE READ AND GOOD NEWS!!

THEY ARE BEING SHUT DOWN ONE AT A TIME

IF WE TAKE ACTION AND REPORT THEM TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY and animal welfare organizations.

Get another vet office job OR stay there and save as many of these dogs as you can.AANND Please REPORT the puppy mill to peta or the Humane Society Anonymously!! They WILL shut them down.

    If choosing to report anonomously,,

Never breathe a word to your co workers or friends on what you choose to do.

    It could mean your job.

It is because of Stupid Paris Hilton everyone wants a designer dog dogs like that are mutts.

Why everyone wants to follow that wentch is beyond me!!

This is like asking "are we supporting drug dealers by having rehab centers?" NO. The dogs end up in the shelters because of other reasons, but the transaction to the backyard breeder/puppy mill has been made. When a puppy is bought from BYB or pet store, the BYB/PM gets money. When a dog is bought or adopted from a shelter, the BYB/PM doesn't see a CENT. It's not as simple as being about getting a dog out of a bad situation. It's doing so and making sure that other dogs aren't put in the same situation. Supporting BYBs/PMs means MORE dogs are put in the same situation as a "demand" is created.

This is very similar to a problem that was given to us in our Veterinary Ethics course. My response to you will be the same as it was there.

You have to look at the situation, and decide what you want the outcome to be. Which points (specifically) do you object to? Presumably it is the irresponsible breeding, and poor conditions these animals are kept in.

The ideal circumstance, is to improve the conditions under which these animals are raised. I don't know the details of the contract you clinic has with the pet store, if its a flat fee for each dog sold, or if they pay you for the medical care required (presumably at a discounted rate because of the bulk).

Either way, you're in a position as a clinic to make a difference here, as long as you keep the contract. Speaking to the owner of the pet store, letting them know what is normal to expect, what is not, and what they can potentially do about it, and what consequences it may have for his bottom line (I presume that they are charged more, as the puppies are in general unhealthy).

If you send them away to another clinic, your control of the situation drops to 0.

As long as the clinic isn't being dishonest in any way, then I don't see there is any ethical breech here. The animals must be treated. To turn them away would be unethical.

I'd keep the job for now and start looking elsewhere for a new job. Just keep job-hunting.

I'd also question the owner as to why he/she signed the contract. Let them know that it is really going to make the vet office look bad. I think it was a foolish mistake. Members of the general public against puppy mills can now protect the vet office, and it is a great way to actually LOSE clients.

Your still being a hypocrite for working at a company that you are against. You sound like a kind hearted person that can find a job at the SPCA or even another clinic. Please try to go somewhere else. If you feel this strongly about puppy mills, then turn that mill in. You have enough evidence to turn it into the SPCA. If they are shut down then there is no need to change jobs. Remember money isn't everything.

I am 54 years old and have been working from the age of 11. I had THREE jobs by the time I was 15 and still kept a good grade average in school. I have done EVERY type of job almost in my life...including swallowing my "convictions" and working a few times in less than "good" cirumstances. I became SOOOOOO sickened when I did governmental work...I couldn't stand to LOOK at anyone I worked with nor could I stand myself in the end. It made a MUCH WORSE person of ME....and it is YOU that must be able to stand to look at YOU in the mirror for the rest of your life!!! Now I am old enough to KNOW that we must make our decisions in life based on what we KNOW to be right and KNOW to be wrong. God will take care of the rest. Faith means believing that is TRUE. When I QUIT my governmental job and another as a journalist for a paper of "ill-repute" I DID suffer financially. But I didn't starve and neither did my family. God provides the basics of what we need to suvive IF we lay our faith on him and TRY to do what is RIGHT. Actually you can view it as a "natural law." Following the things and principals that we KNOW to be right leads us to all the RIGHT things in life... But ignoring the "rights" of life and allowing them to continue when WE CAN do something about it, leads us right down the "primrose" path to nowhere.

Turn in this facility and do whatever you can to have it SHUT DOWN. IF with all your efforts that doesn't work, then at least you will know that by leaving the job, YOU are no longer a part of the "wrong" being done to these beings that God gave us the responsibility of "looking after" in a good and caring way.

Blessings in your decision to follow "right."

You are performing a job. Don't over-think things here. Just educate others on the fact that these puppies are from puppy mills and have plenty of health issues. That is all you can do.

If you aren't happy then look for another job.

The puppies deserve good vet care. Obviously they have never had it before. I understand your feelings but someone has to care for those pups. I hate puppy mills with a vengeance.

Be smart...continue looking for another job and hope that one lands soon. Until then you want to be able to pay your bills. But that's just what I would do! However, I fully understand your feelings towards puppy mills! I agree!

Look for another job and leave as soon as you find one.

Knowing what you know, you will never have peace of mind helping in any way to make money off the suffering of animals, you know that.
