Born with talent, or not..........?

This is interesting to me. Do you think artists were born with the ability to draw great pictures, or do you think they just needed the patience and drive to learn how to draw and become really good artists?

I think some people are born with talent in them to do such things, while others think even if you can't draw a stick figure worth anything, if you have patience you can learn to be an artist.

What do you think?

I don't think there is such a thing as "talent" ( I mean, look at American Idol!! LMFAO!!!! )

All joking aside, I think everyone is capable of doing anything anyone else can do. We are all endowed with the same 'gifts' and it would be cold-hearted to tell a kid that he or she "just can't do" this or that.

Even though we are unique ( in essence...) we're all created equal! What might make someone unequal might be the way they were raised into believing that people are different or that they are not up to something... Yes, there are people who are able to do things that another might not succeed in doing as easily but that's not because one "is born with" a certain 'talent' it just the way that person see the world around him/her and the way his/her mind is coordinated with his/her hands or ears (drawing, music...) Patience and perseverance are two valuable virtues in getting something right and let's not forget the old adage: Practice makes perfect.

  • Yes. I think some artists are born with a talent. Mozart walked to the Violin and played a song perfectly. Although, some artists have been great artists by practicing a lot. However, you can't just draw superior in a flash. You need to practice to become great. So the answer to this question is 50%-50%.

I believe you are born with it and it's a gift from God. Yes there are people who can't draw a strait line and go to school to learn and some succeed at it and become great artists and some don't ever make the grade no matter how hard they try and get frustrated because they can't.

So I think the ones who go to school to learn art and succeed had it in them all the time and just didn't know it. And the ones that don't succeed in art never had it in them from the beginning. But that is not to say they don't have great talent in some other fields. I think we are all born with some type of talent, and only time will tell us what that is.

Great artists are born with the talent, but they still needed patience and drive to hone that talent into something worthwhile. However, someone can't just pick up an pencil or brush and expect sheer determination to get them through. You need a knack for it, just like music or even math.

Everyone learns in different ways. More than that, different tasks are easier for people to learn one way over another. Learning methods include walkthroughs, reading, graphics, lecture, self experimentation, dialogue/debate, etc.

Someone who is naturally talented is able to learn the task through self experimentation, i.e. they pick it up on their own. Additional training is useful for picking up new ideas to explore. This applies to art, sports, engineering, etc. (This is a basic component of an economic model I worked on in the past.)

With that said, different hemispheres of the brain influence different activities. The right side of the brain is more creative, and controls the left side of the body. The left side of the brain is more logical, and controls the right side of the body.

Rarely is someone born with talent. Most people are nurtured, i.e. their parents put them into something like golf or music and they practiced since they were young and they get so good that it seems natural to everyone else. btw, its never too late, remember Grandma Moses who started painting in old age.

You should read "Talent is Overrated by Geoff Colvin" oh and read this link below that I pasted.
