Why is "roscoe" slang for a pistol?

Can anyone tell me the etymology of "roscoe" as slang for a pistol or revolver?

it dates back to 1910 - 1915 but apparently there is no way to know it's origin, apart from the fact that it derives from the name Roscoe.
