My friend's cat won't eat?

My friend found a stray and wants to take care of it until it's claimed. (and i know it's technically not her cat but it was easier to write). its a kitten and it won't eat. what should she do? i don't think she can afford to go to the vet.

How old is the kitten? Is it tame enough to handle? If it's big enough to be "on it's own", it can eat KITTEN FOOD.....not have to be nursed with bottle and milk replacement !!

Your friend can get some KITTEN food and feed it, give it a dish of clean water, and a box / bed to sleep in. She also needs to introduce it to a litter box. Even outside cats can use a litter box, and then when they're moved inside, they're already "trained" !!

If it has fleas, she needs to put some flea preventative on it, or it will bring fleas to her home / yard, and she'll have a flea INFESTATION before she knows it.

If she can't afford a vet, she needs to take it to a "no-kill" shelter, so it can get treatment and find a "forever" home. Hopefully, where you live, the kitten "problem" isn't such that every cat brought in gets held for only a short time, then put down. Even the "no kill" shelters will sometimes transfer cats to another shelter, if they have too many.

Hope your friend does what's right for the kitten.........ADOPT it, feed it, take it to the vet, and care for it........and get it spayed / neutered, so that it doesn't continue the "accidental" litters that so many " stray " kittens come from...........

    Good luck.

Put some milk replacement for kitties or chicken broth on your pinkie finger and put your pinkie finger near the kitten's nose. But if it is not eating because it is sick, you must take the kitten to the vet now. Most likely, someone dumped the kitty and no one is going to claim it. Only 2% of lost cats are ever reclaimed. If she can't afford to take it to the vet, call animal control and tell them you found a sick cat. Now, if you feed a cat for more than 3 days, it is legally yours. You may have to pay a fee for putting the cat in an animal shelter. It is about 15.00 but it depends on where you live. No-kill shelters don't usually take in dumped pets, they take in pets that have had some care from their owners. They probably won't take in a sick one, but city animal control will. Where I live, animal control won't pick up stray cats unless you tell them it is sick or injured.

  • Not eating is not good.

it may be too small for normal cat food.. try KMR milk for kitties and bottle feed.

if large enough to eat kitten food and is not eating, tyr turkey baby food, most sick cats will eat that stuff it's not fantastic for them but at least it's something.

and then your friend needs to take kitty to a humane society or vet office and surrender the animal. if something is seriously wrong with kitty it will be a lot of money to get her fixed.

when my kitty stopped eating and had a high fever she had to spend 2 nights at the vet's office.... not to go in to detail let's just say it cost me $1,500.00 the first week I had her. but she was mine and I loved her.

Source(s): Good luck! and make sure she drinks water things can get ugly VERY fast if kitty won't drink. EDIT: don't feed regular milk. that's not good for cats. Just so you know.
