What kind of bird is this please?

We have an infestation of carpenter bees and I think this bird is after the larvae.

    You are looking at either a Downy or Hairy Woodpecker, female. The Downy is a smaller bird, with a smaller bill than it's big brother, the Hairy Woodpecker, Their range overlap.

    One characteristics that can be used to tell the difference is that Downy woodpecker's tail feathers can have barring on the outer feathers....which your picture shows. I would label this a Downy Woodpecker although the bill looks a little big ...
