Would you really obey a god who demands your love?

Martyrs are commonly esteemed in Christian churches for having proclaimed their love for Jesus Christ in the most passionate way possible. To a Christian, there is almost no greater thing a person can do to show their love for God.

Does anyone else think this is a disgusting thing? Or do you think it is good that we commemorate the martyrs?

In the Book of Judas, Judas describes his miraculous vision from God in which he sees men sacrificing other men to God. He asks Jesus about these things horrible things, wondering what they mean, and Jesus tells Judas that he will share with him knowledge secret to all the other disciples. Most Christians look at this and call it garbage esoteric talk from the disciple known as the betrayer of Jesus. Others recognizing that Judas was a crucial instrument of the Lord's plan for salvation, understand that Judas's story is meant more as an accusation against the extremist views that are being spread in the Christian Church (because the Gospel of Judas was after all written many years after Jesus died, as all the gospels were also.)

Anything that threatened the strength of the church was called "Anathema!" by the early church fathers. And John 3:16 (arguably the "Holiest" verse in the Bible) only further bolsters the strength of the church that people MUST CONFESS that he is LORD (their master!) in order to receive any salvation.

So my question remains, why would a person want to worship a god who demands so much? Love, slavery, obedience, happiness. If you do not offer all these things 100% to the Lord, then he will say he does not even know you on the judgment day.

Personally I would rather enjoy my life here on earth living a morally guided happy life, than gamble it all away on an afterlife with a jealous god who I can never satisfy.

Update:

Exodus, I do think it is fair to compare a soldier risking his life for others to be the same as risking your life for your god. Dying for a god accomplishes nothing except promotes the idea that others should be encouraged to do the same.

Jesus Christ loved me before I started my walk with Him. He loved us all when we were yet lost and helpless.

God does not demand love, He commands love, God is love!

    Bless the Lord!

Is that what you think a martyr is? Really?

Think about it in terms you can understand then. Let's use your sweet innocent child (assuming you have a kid). Would you renounce your child for any reason? What if I tortured you to get you give up your child, would you do it? Would you tell your child to go away and never come back if I threatened to kill you if you didn't?

No, of course not, you'd die for your family, you would die for your child. You would willingly lay down your life for your beliefs, otherwise that "morally guided happy life" won't mean much, huh.

Well that's exactly what happened with the martyr's of all centuries, all faiths. They were told to renounce their beliefs, told to denounce God or they would die. They chose death.

Notice that nowhere did I say that God demanded it. He didn't. You should know more about love than that, if you don't then I truly pity you.

First of all, if you're going to pose this kind of question, perhaps you should reference where in scripture God DEMANDS our love. Secondly, your quoting from the Book of Judas in an apparent attempt to imply or create the impression that it is canonical is deception at it's highest and immediately denounces any credibility you had going into the exercise.

In the Ten Commandments it does say that "you shall love the Lord your God" but then it goes on to say "with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might". If one chooses to love God, that is how it should be done. Nothing removes the choice from man as to whether he decides to love God or not. We are free to love Him or not. He tells us that He wants us to love Him with all our being. There is nothing inconsistent with that demand. My wife expects the very same thing from me about her. Anything less than complete and total love is nothing more than infatuation.

God is a giver, not a taker. He has saved us from disaster, given the ultimate sacrifice and loves us unconditionally. All He asks from us is that we believe in Him. Martyrs are those that die for what they believe. They hold on to truth until their last breath. I highly esteem them and would rather die than deny the truth of Christ.

I would rather live an abundant life on this earth in relationship w/God AND have the joy of eternal presence with my God.

    of course I would

and you are wrong God does not demand we become martyrs.

Martyrs are recognized for the sacrifice they made by being killed by unbelievers for their belief.

The gospel of judas is a false doctrine not inspired by God.

That is why the apostles rejected it as did the followers of those who were trained by the apostles.

Is it a disgusting thing if someone throws his body(sacrifice) on top of a grenade to SAVE his fellow soldiers?

    Ignorance must be bliss.

    GOD bless

As you go about your business, think about this. One God, one Love. Two gods, and many loves. This is the answer forever, here or hereafter.

I usually tell my wife that she is obligated to love me.

It doesn't work out so well.

Love me or burn isn't very loving in my opinion. Frankly it's like a gun to my head, it feels like rape.
