The Young and the Restless is dealing with the sudden departure of yet another of its stars. In the latest surprise exit, Chris Engen has allegedly walked out in protest over an upcoming same-sex storyline. The actor joined the cast of Y&R just over a year ago.
The cast and crew of The Young and the Restless is reeling over the walkout of yet another of its stars. Chris Engen (Adam Wilson) made the sudden decision to quit the show in protest over an upcoming storyline… a storyline that involves a same-sex kiss.
Engen is said to have picked up the latest show script and learned through reviewing his lines that his character was going to be getting intimate with attorney Rafe Torres (Yani Gellman). Months of frustration over the direction of his storyline and lack of airtime exploded in a confrontation between Engen and the show's production team. According to sources, Engen has long felt that the writing for Adam was going in the wrong direction.
Setside sources told TVGuide Canada, "Chris hasn't been happy for a while. He doesn't like the dark direction his character is taking. He's called in sick a lot recently and has been taking a slew of meetings with Y&R's [executives] to discuss his future on the show."
Although Engen is well-known for keeping his personal life separate from his career, some are wondering if his personal beliefs may conflict with his character's storyline. The 29-year-old Engen is a graduate of Bishop Montgomery High School, a Catholic school in his hometown of Torrance, California. The school's mission statement reads, in part, "We serve the needs of the Church and the larger community by providing intellectually mature persons who have learned to integrate world knowledge with Catholic beliefs and values."
"Chris is still under contract," sources continue, and the show is mulling the pros and cons of taking legal action against the actor.
Engen made his first on-screen appearance on February 12. Meanwhile, the role of Adam Wilson is currently being recast.
Adam Recast on YOUNG AND RESTLESS!
A new Adam will be wreaking havoc in the Newman household on Y&R, a show spokesperson confirms. TV Guide broke the news earlier today. Y&R has recast Chris Engen with seasoned actor Michael Muhney, who starred on VERONICA MARS and THE HUNTRESS, and has done guest spots on many prime-time series, including WITHOUT A TRACE, CHARMED, JAG and CSI: MIAMI. There were rumors earlier this year that Engen, who began on Y&R on February 12, 2008, was leaving, especially after his character was sent to prison. Muhney will first appear on June 25.

I heard about this. It is too bad Engen feels this way but he is an actor. Did he really think there would never be any possibility of the writers asking him to change the sexual orientation of his character? However, he does have a right to hold on to his own beliefs so let's just hope the new Adam will be a good actor.

While I do no fault him for what his beliefs are, he makes a living of acting. So if he walks off a job because he doesn't like his upcoming storyline, that's his choice. And this soap has been #1 for how many years now? Introducing a gay storyline wouldn't do any damage to the shows ratings. It may just bring in some gay & lesbian viewers. Gays are in the world and we not going anywhere! Is it too much to ask to see a storyline on a soap that we can relate to?

I applaud him for standing by his principles...so many people would just abandon them in his position. I don't think that Y&R should pursue this story line at all. I hate having political agenda's pushed down my throat and to be honest, Y&R is my only escape from reality for one hour a day. They're going to ruin it for me by forcing something...and it DOES feel forced. To be honest I think the writing SUCKS as of late. The people they need to get rid of are the writers.
If they must go through with this story line, I can deal with it...but if they pursue legal action against Chris Engen for leaving the show based on principle, I will quit watching. I don't agree with forcing someone to abandon their beliefs and if that's what they decide to do, then I won't continue to support them.

the guy does look a lot like adam. i'm not opposed to homosexuality, but i would be upset if i got a job as an actress and a few months later they were expecting me to make out with a chick. more power to those that are up for it, but i'm kind of tired of society trying to stuff homosexuality down everybodies' throats. i admire him for sticking to his guns on this issue. i'm just hope he isn't blacklisted from hollywood like isiah washington. hollywood is so homosexual underneath it all (let's be honest, we know that most of the actors, directors and producers in hollywood are gay or bi) that anyone that is against homosexuality can quickly be kept from getting roles.

That sucks! I just started to like Adam! I like the bad ones!~ lol! He shoulda known u can't pick what ur character is gonna do. He shouldn't be into acting then. I have to say I think this is a dumb way for his character to go. It's just not Adam at all!

If he is almost blind how is he going to know the difference? Just go with it, jobs are hard to come by now. This seems like the new story line in soaps.
