96 civic lx d16y7 to japanese 96-98 civic d15?

my d16y7 motor striped the spline on the camshaft and camshaft pully and figure it needs to be replaced. there is a importer of japanese engines and transmissions nearby that has a d15 that is supposed to be a direct replacement for my car if it where in japan as they do not have the d16y7 there? if i can go with this engine it will save me about $300 but i want to make sure i wont have harness or bracket issues etc. they told me i would have to use my intake and exhaust manifolds but other than that everything else is the same.

what do you think??? any input would be greatly appreciated!

ok for non-jdm engines the engine code will end with a number ie B16A2 whereas the jdm version would be B16A.

    There is a OBD-1 D15B also a OBD-2 D15B (3 Stage VTEC).

generally speaking for USDM i dont believe there was a D15 meant for the 96+up civic's, since they changed to OBD2 and moved to the D16's.

i believe in Thailand, United Erab Emriates, Malaysia and the Philippines they had the D15B's (3 stage Vtec ones) in the 95-00 Civic's(EK3's) Ex-i, Lx-i,VT-i and 1.5i's.

to put that D15B in your car is a direct swap i believe but you have the get the D15B 3 stage Vtec ECU

First off there is no D15 past a 95 model year. Starting in 96 they used D16 motors. You will have harness issues as the D15 is a OBD1 car and yours is a OBD2 car, EVERY PLUG IS DIFFERENT. The only motor you can swap and be a DIRECT replacement is the Y7, even a D16Y8 from a EX will need some wiring done as well as a ECU.

If they are using a d15 out of a 96civic and up then there should be not trouble because both engines will be OBD2 so you wont have to swap out the harness or ecu.

The hood, fenders, bumpers, radiator support and lic plate holder are all different between the two....if your willing to change those items you can retro fit the bug eye 96-98 lamps on a 99 My guess is its cheaper just to get the proper headlights used from a wrecking yard or an aftermarket set on ebay.
