What is the worst city you've ever been to?

The worst city I've ever been to is a place called Stockton in California. You drive in on the freeway and there's graffiti everywhere on buildings, you get onto the surface streets and you see mostly illegal mexicans. Dreadful place.

    Gary Indiana

When I recently spent some time in that city on business, I was shocked at how many damaged and abandoned homes I saw. And driving through the downtown area, I was shocked to see how many businesses were abandoned. I could tell they were abandoned because either there was no glass in the windows, or the windows and doors were boarded up.

Some of these abandoned and damaged homes sell for $10,000 or less. But I don't know if anyone wants to live in them.

The entire city is not like this. There were two sections of that city that I visited that had some very nice homes and well kept neighborhoods.

Also, whenever I hear city crime statistics compared on news programs, Gary seems to be mentioned often in terms of the relatively high crime rate it suffers from.

I'll definitely agree with you about Stockton.

I had a horrible experience there in college during a road trip from So. California to Vancouver, BC. I made the mistake of stopping for the night at a Motel 6 in Stockton. The stuff I saw there in that motel parking lot that night.... yikes.

However, I think Stockton might be edged out just slightly by Camden, NJ. If there ever was a city in need of high-speed nuclear urban renewal, it is Camden. There's a reason it is considered the "most dangerous city in the US"

What's with the Stockton bashing? Stockton is like any big city in California, there are nice parts and ugly parts. I've been in many worse cities, and I currently live in one of them. There are many, many, small towns throughout the country that are also over run with illegal mexicans more significantly than Stockton, and yes, I've been in Stockton.

Stockton is pretty much Sacramento but with more Mexicans than Whites.

Nothing compared to Baltimore, poor ghettos, poor people. horrid living conditions, they should build a new city so that all those people can have a nice place to live, miles of row houses, no place to get a job.

    Modesto, CA.

You just feel lost or trapped there. The fact that I had to protect my car the whole time was not cool!
