Stephen King wrote the screenplay to "The Shining" as a mad-for-TV movie. It's far superior to the muddled mess that Stanley Kubrick made. Roman Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby," though, was true to it's origin.
I'd say "Rosemary's Baby" then the TV movie of "The Shining" and then Stanley Kubrick's version of "The Shining."
Tobe Hooper's "Poltergeist" is the scariest movie, I think. That damn clown! Aaaaargh!

The better film? Maybe Rosemary's Baby, but I actually prefer the Shining. I've always thought that the poster for Rosemary's Baby was scarier than the actual movie.
BQ: Eraserhead

Rosemary's Baby by just a tiny bit. Anything that has to do with the devil scares the crap out of me. Although I am a fan of Nicholson in The Shining. When his wife finds his manuscript, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" typed 500 times has got to be one of the scariest moments on film.
As for the second part definitely The Exorcist. The last time I saw this movie I had to sleep with the lights on and I was thirty years old. Too scary for me.

I'll tell ya... I've read both books, but not positive I've seen either movie all the way through! Would have a difficult time choosing between them, tho...
BQ: Silence of the Lambs
(I thought I was going to have a heart attack the first time I watched it!)
Does it really fit the "horror" genre... maybe "suspense" would be closer...

I think I'll go for Aphex Twin, thank you.
Rosemary's baby was pretty frightening. I watched at a very young age, though. Also was scared by Jacob's Ladder when I first watched it at the age of 8.
Anyway, not so much scary, but a movie that REALLY disturbed me was Eraserhead.

Both are fantastic but I think The Shining is better.
