Take a lure and put it on your line- hold the rod parallel with the the ground- press control bar and let lure fall to the ground- if it hits the ground and the spool over runs, tighten up the drag until the spool stops when the lure hits the ground. You may have to over tighten it slightly until you get the hang of it. The main thing after it is adjusted properly is to practice until you "educate" your thumb to control the spool and keep it from back lashing. But did you put the line on your self? If you did, a bait caster has to be re-spooled differently from spinning reels. You take the spool of line and let someone hold a pencil through the middle and have the line come over the top of the spool and toward your reel. The spool will spin as you reel in the line filling up your spool. If this is not the way it went on it may be a major source of your troubles. And I have found a line with less memory and a lot of limpness cast better then other lines. Try it using these guidelines and I'm sure you will see major improvement. Good luck!

OK.. gotta love them.. and you will
Start with getting all the line nice and smooth then slowly let out about the amount of line you will want to cast. Place some tape on the line in the reel nice and tight. I use electrical tape as it is in the boat. Now you will have much less to get tangled and thus willing to work at casting more.
Keep your thumb on the line as you cast lightly and press down as soon as the lure, casting plug hits anything.. like that silly tree in the back yard. Read the instructions on how to set the reel up and do it just as they tell you. Then, take a deep breath and head out to the lawn and work at casting.. It will come and you too will love the bait caster.

Bruce provides a lot of great suggestions. The only thing I will reinforce is it took me a lot of casts to become proficient with my first bait caster (10 years ago). Since, I prefer bait casters over spinning reels hands down.
Abu Garcia's are great reels. I have used them for many years and they are smooth casters.

there is usually a well illustrated instruction sheet included with these reels.
you obviously didn't take the time to read it.
now, go find the box and look at all the paperwork included. that will explain with pictures much better than can mere words.
adjusting the drag has NOTHING to do with the casting of any reel. there is a nut underneath the handle that needs to be adjusted. be careful to not overtighten it. you will push the bearing and bearing cap out of the other side. then the reel will be absolutely impossible to fish with and be worthless.

ok there is alot of diverse clarification why this might take place. the simpilest restoration to this is toss stuff heavy. spinnerbait, jig, buzzbait, huge topwater bait, regardless of. between the tricks I rather have discovered is to easily whip the bait with the rod tip while casting, dont horse it such as you will possibly with a spinning genuine. Its a rely of expertise rather, in simple terms throw the bait threw the air dont lauch it like a rocket. youll get there. Reel settings could be an element for you, possibly they're set too severe? possibly your line is in simple terms too thick? possibly your entice weight is in simple terms too mild on your rod. Oh and there's a great coaching gadget in the doorstep each and every morning. The newspaper. positioned it up on your armpit and attempt casting without droping it. i assume the applicable recommendation is dont horse it! adult men i fish with and myself as nicely get excited specifically circumstances and attempt to solid too troublesome and it noticeably much continuously finally leads to a birds nest. Take a while bro, dont supply up on it. as quickly as you get it you wont choose to place it down. attempt sorting out bass professional shops online, cabela's or perhaps you tube has to have some how toos on it.
