Recs for a good whodunnit mystery book?

Can anyone recommend some good mystery novels? I would like to read a true whodunnit, figure-it-out-based-on-the-clues, kind of book. Not just a crime story, but one where the reader can really try to participate.

I have already read a lot of Agatha Christie books. I would prefer something modern, if possible, but it doesn't have to be. Thanks!

Update:

--- I'm going to check them all out. Got my summer reading all set. Can't really pick a best answer, -- all were very helpful. Thanks everyone!

try reading After the first death by Robert Cormier. It's about a gang of boys programmed to kill and their clash with U.S. army soldiers!

Masquarade in Venice. Old book but a very good story. It'll keep you guessing and it involves a love story too.
