Where is Pres. Obama's Entry Strategy for Dealing With North Korea?

North Korea yesterday tested another nuclear device. This one larger than the last.

President Obama's reaction so far has been, "this is a violation of international law and UN Resolutions."

So what should be President Obama's next step, if at all (?)-- yet another in a series of harsh UN resolutions and letters which is later supplemented with tons of grain in unmarked bags?

Or, might it be having a lofty dialog with the rogue nation hoping they'll come round. Of course in this event, the Administration would have to yield to the North Koreans on some points in order to make the summit/dialog look like a success. But here, the crucial question will be: What will Obama give in on: aid money without accounting? ; embarrassing and appeasing guarantees? ; apologies? or what?

Or, might it be that the UN condemnation ~is~ the engagement?

Or, might the Obama media spin machine doctor up some elaborate blame to attribute to the previous Administration? This seems to be its recent, fashionable tactic.

Though Obama the Candidate had strong criticism of the Bush Administration lack of an exit strategy in Iraq, it seems that the now Obama Administration does not have much of strategy for entry in dealing with old, but continuing threats like North Korea, and newer threats such as Iran's nuclear development.

Though so far ineffective, I guess he means well. Liberals often do.

No, its not a fashion. The Bush administration deserves all forms criticism for spending so much money on Iraq that was of no threat at all to any country whatsoever.

All that time allowed the Taliban to regroup in Afghanistan and Pakistan which allowed them to perform heinous acts of terrorism. And of course there is always North Korea, with which the Bush administration engaged diplomatically all the time.

Judging from the nuclear test, I think that son of a lunatic (Jong-Il) has doing nothing but buying time; that is for sure. Military action should be in the last resort, and I think that time will be pretty soon, maybe even now.

Lets hope that Obama administration and other countries actually do something about North Korea.

It would be nice if there actually was something that could be done about North Korea, but in reality there isn't. Like any chronic infection, N. Korea can be 'treated', but never cured. I suspect that the person that asked this 'question' would be in favor of an invasion ala Iraq to 'liberate' the N. Koreans from a dictator and prevent that dictator from possessing WMD. An admirable idea, but the flaws are many and the virtues few. An invasion isn't in the cards mainly because we're already engaged in two wars with no natural stopping place. A war in Korea would also entail the risk of intervention by China....an event that happened once before for those that remember the history of that area...are really going to take that risk? Iran illustrates the same problem as N. Korea. The point here is that sometimes a problem can exist without a clear cut solution. Sometimes this is called 'the limits of power'. Barack is no dummy...I'm sure he'd like to deal with both Korea and Iran...who wouldn't? The problem is that beside what we're doing we have no real options....except the same one we had and still have with Russia....MAD...Mutual Assured Destruction. In real life, both N. Korea and Iran are stuck with expensive weapons they can't use. Meanwhile both of those countries are going nowhere. Both are contained. Both are in no position to do any real harm outside their own borders. Should they aggresively step outside their borders they'll be destroyed and they know it. Right now Barack's main problem is making certain that this country can pay its bills and that the citizens of this country can pay theirs. That's a problem that actually does have a solution, as difficult as it may be. Korea and Iran may be dramatic in their way, but as long as a balance of power is maintained neither of them is a real threat....and that's the truth!

What I would do and what Obama would do are two completely different strategies. In my humble opinion, he should quietly get on a plane to Japan and meet with prime Minister Aso. In this meeting, he needs to tell the Japanese to rearm and to create sophisticated technology that will re-invoke fear (of the Japanese) once again. That will stop North Korea because fear is the most powerful deterrent. South Korea and Japan need to get passed their historical differences ( which is very difficult but very possible) to balance out the region. South Korea has a good military force that is quite large. It also sophisticated technology. If the Japanese become their military ally, it will balance both North Korea and China. The U.S. has zero leverage over the Chinese because of our debt. Kim Jong IL doesn't always listen to the Chinese.

Personally, I don't think the Chinese had much influence over this because the Japanese have been chopping down article nine " peace clause" for some time. With Kim Jong IL pulling this stunt, it just perpetuates the last thing Chinese want, Japanese rearmament.

Its clear you are a conservative. So lets go just a little further in examining what exactly he could do. A first strike response maybe? We already know the North Koreans aren't exactly level headed. So now what do we do.Get China pissed off and bring the world to the brink of nuclear war ? You know that is what will happen if we don't create a consenses with their neighbors.I would get pissed if someone landed anuke anywhere near my country. The last three presidents have had problems with them. Its not an easy fix. Theres alot of lives at stake here. Its not as simple as liberal or conservative, ask Mr.Bush.

We simply do not know what course he will take. I wouldn't be talking about liberals and North Korea seeing as how George Bush just continued to indulge NK and fall for the blackmail they've been using on the U.S. for two decades. We are engaging Iran in talks about their nuclear ambitions directly after the elections, that has already been established. We can guess what our strategy will be with these two entities but I'll just keep hoping it's not a continuation of what we have done so far - which is basically nothing. These two problems are a huge test for Obama. I hope he is able to do what other Presidents have not, we should all hope that is the case.

"President Obama's reaction so far has been, "this is a violation of international law and UN Resolutions."

It's been ONE day since then. Give the man a chance formulate a proper response. I know that Bush would have already been out there "blustering" and posturing, but our new President is a reasonable man that takes time to CONSIDER his actions first.

Just like the previous administration left us in a deep domestic trouble hole that's going to take some time to climb out of, they also practiced almost zero foreign policy the last couple of years. That's going to take some time to get under control too.

extra beneficial isolation. My steps: a million) Iran: set up 2 Palestinian states, not one. Gaza and West financial enterprise. Iran's effect could be limited to Gaza, that's on the ingredient of Egypt, which could be extra vulnerable to maintain the Islamofascists in verify. 2) NK: embargo vs NK and countries that traded with NK

China may just take out North Korea and with America owing so much moneys to them its unlikely Obama would do anything even less than the zero. f.p

He will build a world consensus so the US doesn't appear too arrogant then he will send Hilary to China to see what she can do to bring Chinese pressure on N Korea. He will negotiate until the third nuke test. Good luck to you
