The movie Armageddon - could the Space Shuttle go to the moon?

In the movie "Armageddon", the space shuttle is shown doing a sling-shot around the moon, to catch up with an asteroid. But the shuttle is primarily used to carry payloads into Earth orbit.

If needed, could the Space Shuttle go to the moon, or is this just a Hollywood fantasy?

It is just a hollywood fantasy, but remember that those were to be the newest shuttles. To get the shuttle to the moon it would need extra engine strength and fuel. Them having to refuel before pushing on is correct. The shuttle, according to Nasa, is basically out of fuel when it breaks the atmosphere.
