I need to raise the soil level in my flower bed, do I take out hostas and perennials and replant higher?

My flower beds that are by the house and bordered by bricks need about 5 inches more soil so I can get them slanted away from the house for drainage. They are planted with hostas, perennials and lilys. Do I take all these out and replant them at a higher level? What is a good ground cover for between hostas? What kind of mulch works best and how many inches thick is good? I live by the Kansas City MO area. Thank you for your time and answers...

I just had to do the same thing last summer. I dug up all my flowers, make sure to get all the roots, i added dirt etc.. to raise my beds about 6 inches, then replanted everything with good potting soil and black mulch about 2 inches deep. I have phlox planted between my hosta's but that's obviously a matter of choice. I live in zone 6-Louisville Ky. good luck!

Yes, you take all these out, build up the soil, then replant at the higher level. The good thing is any top soil, fill is OK for these plants.

Creeping phlox, silver mound, there are many. Light colored wood chips look best IMO, but you may want gold or red.
