Greenland ice melting rates- alarming? This century, rise sea levels @ N.E. of N. America by +12"- 20" ?
Suggest this report from Reuters (partial copy- below). AGW/ climate change issues / conclusions are troubling, especially since we own property on the east coast of USA. Once seperate, technical groups study these Greenland melting issues and concur with these general conclusions, then prevention and couter-measures should start soon!

{ Greenland ice could fuel severe U.S. sea level rise
Wed May 27, 2009 5:36pm EDT
by Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New York, Boston and other cities on North America's northeast coast could face a rise in sea level this century that would exceed forecasts for the rest of the planet if Greenland's ice sheet keeps melting as fast as it is now, researchers said on Wednesday.
Sea levels off the northeast coast of North America could rise by 12 to 20 inches more than other coastal areas if the Greenland glacier-melt continues to accelerate at its present pace, the researchers reported.
This is because the current rate of ice-melting in Greenland could send so much fresh water into the salty north Atlantic Ocean that it could change the vast ocean circulation pattern sometimes called the conveyor belt. Scientists call this pattern the meridional overturning circulation.
"If the Greenland melt continues to accelerate, we could see significant impacts this century on the northeast U.S. coast from the resulting sea level rise," said Aixie Hu, lead author of an article on the subject in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
"Major northeastern cities are directly in the path of the greatest rise," said Hu, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.}

Greenland ice melt matters little for two reasons. First, Greenland contains only 1/15th as much land ice as does Antarctica. The mean temp in Antarctica is 50 deg F below zero so ice can not melt there if global temperatures increas by a few degrees. It is the land ice only which can cause the ocean level to rise or fall. Sea ice does not matter...its a math thingee... see Bernoulli for that explanation. Also, the fact is that in 2007 the amount of sea ice in the Arctic achieved a high point since measurement started 30 years ago.

I have seen calculations showing sea level increases of cm's not feet. These numbers may be high for the following reason. In order for ice to melt the temperature must rise. As the temperature rises water vapor is formed. The evaporation leads to clouds and finally rain. This has a two fold effect to reduce the initial sea level increase: 1) the humidity effect- more water vapor is retained in the atmosphere and does not recycle back into the ocean as rain, 2) dispersion: some of the rain will fall on land and not be recycled. The dry arid deserts of the world might turn to lush green jungles, crops would flourish. More CO2!!

If you do have property on the east coast, that property will be there for another 100 yrs - if you live that long.
The global warming scam - evidence made by many of the answerers above - is nothing more than to get people to want to move govt funding to empty projects for the benefit of someones pocket. Hepa filters and mandated polution changes by the EPA is one of the biggest money getters in the free money set up for this "global warming" crap. Those that make the filters, the exhaust emissions products, as well as the CO2 monitors for homes and large corporations are just another money maker and guess who has stock in all those companies? Gore and several others that are jumping on that bandwagon to make money. There are a thousand other factors that contribute to rising water levels, tectonic plate shift, volcanic activity, earth dispursement (mudslides, mining, land mass expansion (hawaiian islands are growing, ect.
Here's an experiment for you. Take a large glass dish or long aquarium. Put a medium sized rounded rock on one side and on the other side put a smaller rock on the other. Fill with water till it meets the just below the middle of the larger rock or about covers the smaller rock. Mark a line on the outside of the dish or tank. To simulate volcanic activity, start pouring some sand mixed with small pieces of gravel over the smaller rock one time slowly, about a half cup and let it set over night. Simulate ocean currents and waves at a slow pace by tapping the side of the dish enough to move the water several times throughout the day. That night add another 1/2 cup and repeat the wave simulation and mark a new line. You will do this for about 20 days (simulates about 150 yrs of change) but on the 10th day shake the dish or tank somewhat forcefully, not vigorously, to simulate tectonic plate shift or earthquake/ Tsunami for about 10 seconds and afterwards, in the middle, add a line of smooth pebbles (sort of looks like a little dam or rip in the earths crust under the ocean). Continue to add a 1/4 cup of the mixture every night for the last 10 days and keep the wave action several times a day or more. At the end of the 20 days, where is the water level? Remember, we did not add anymore water. We didn't "melt" any ice. So why did the water lever rise?
There are a thousand "wannabe" islands under the ocean from volcanic activity. There are landslides, earthquakes, rips in the crust, crumbling ridges, all over the world under existing land masses as well as under the ocean. Some of the old "under water caves and under ground caves" have been collapsing for hundreds of years. These underground cave ins or sink holes, have been measured as earthquake activity and collapsing hills. In some places in the world the beaches have not been shrinking but becoming larger and longer. More silt deposits and oceanic debris as well as land debris contribute to their growth. So, if the oceans are rising in some places and lowering in another how can global warming be true based on the idea of the polar ice caps melting? Also remember, the earth does not spin on it's axis smoothly, it actually wobbles slightly. This also will effect us as well.

The entire theory of fresh water altering the MOC pattern is being called into question because the simplistic theory of how the MOC works is apparently wrong. This also renders climate models obsolete, so I wouldn't put to much faith in the scenario being painted by the Reuter news story, it's just another alarmists headline with no data to back it up, and a broken theory that supports it.

Actually- greenland has been cooling and gaining mass for decades- this is just a Gore lie as documented by a British high court:

First of all- there is no warming as determined by all 4 global tracking org's: http://www.dailytech.com/Temperature+Mon...
More than 31,000 scientists have signed this petition demonstrating direct correlation between solar irradiance and earth's temp. They- and many others also show that CO2 levels have been more than 400% higher BEFORE fossil fuels.
PR Research: http://www.petitionproject.org/gw_articl...

700 distinguished scientists have petitioned the Senate calling MMGW a fraud: http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?F...
!00 more leading scientists petitioned the UN- many of them claimed by Gore to be part of his nonsensical UN consensus: http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php...
Gore's "consensus" was actually 5 UN tools:

The enitre change in CO2 after 120 years in industrialized humanity is 1/100th of 1 percent- .028-.038 of 1 percent: http://denialdepot.blogspot.com/2009/04/...
slight CO2 escalation has FOLLOWED warming during every interglacial transition on record- the exact opposite of the Gore lie: http://www.mises.org/story/2571
The real story is why none of this info has EVER been mentioned on CNN, CBS, NBC, NPR, etc. as the socialists in congress try to ram thru a $1,500/person tax on energy...
MMGW is the most expensive fraud in history...

Edit: Hey! I guess isostatic rebound has no application, especially along the US eastern sea board? I can deal with part 2 of causation, I wish others would include part 1 beforehand. The game plan omit, omit ,omit....scare scare scare. I know (Jimz) is aware of what I'm referring to.

There have been a whole host of recent studies suggesting sea level rise estimates for this century are underestimated and likely to affect the east coast of the U.S. even more. This is a major concern, unless one has their head in the sand as indicated by some responses here.

The sea levels have been rising for 20,000 years, by less than 1.5 millimeters per year.

Antarctic ice growing, not shrinking:

You get a lot of good answers, then you get a gullible bucket answer. Let me give you a tip, not that you will take it: when you see "Reuters", understand that it is from an extremely biased viewpoint.
