New companion for my cat?
I used to have 2 tortoiseshell sisters who are 5 years old - both were rescued. One of them has been missing for over a week which is very out of character as she is always at home and comes when she is called. I have contacted petsearch, vets, local rescue organisations, put up posters and leaflets through doors. I fear the worst.... my remaining cat seems a bit lost without her sister. Should I consider getting another? And if so should I get a kitten or another rescue cat that's a bit older? Which would settle best with my remaining cat? Don't worry, if the old cat turned up, I would keep all 3.
I was going to leave it a few weeks... I was just wondering what to do if Sooty doesn't turn up .... like I said it's VERY out of character - she's never disappeared for any time before and she's neutered.

Cats often seem to adapt to having kittens around better than other full sized cats, but it may depend on each ones personality. Some do just fine with other adults, but then you want to get one that you know has lived with other cats. (I think females get along with other females, but that's just an opinion. I know some say they get along with males better.)
I would give the missing kitty another week or so before you decide if you are going to get another one - sometimes they wander around for a bit before they come home.
Best of luck!

Not yet, wait a while. If your cat has gone missing she could return anytime, if she finds a new cat in her place she might not want to come back, you could be resigning her to a life of misery.
There will never be a replacement sister for your remaining cat. She will resent any new intruder as she's already upset and the last thing she needs is a new rival for your attention and affection.
Please, give her a chance to come home, at least a couple more weeks before considering a replacement.
