It really depends upon what your definition of gay men and gay women... Do you include bisexuals in the gay category? Do you include the straight identified men who regularly have sex with men? Also, I haven't run across really reliable stats on transexuals,,,

Bottom line, I would have to say between 10% and 20% of men are either gay or bisexual. I would estimate that between 7% and 15% of women are lesbian or bisexual.

Assuming a population in the US of 300 million, we are probably talking about 40 to 50 million people who have or are having same-sex relations (regardless of how they self-identify).

I base this on the Kinsey Scale developed by Alfred Kinsey when studying Male Sexuality and published in the Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) by Alfred Kinsey, Wardell Pomeroy and others, and was also prominent in the complementary work Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953).

I also base this on a WebMD article reporting on "straight men" who have engage in same sex relations. BTW, 70% of those men who identify as straight but have gay sex are married....

The scale of sexual behavior is as follows:

    Kinsey Rating Scale and Description

    0 - Exclusively heterosexual behavior

1 - Predominantly heterosexual behavior, only incidentally homosexual behavior

2 - Predominantly heterosexual behavior, but more than incidentally homosexual behavior

3 - Equally heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior; bisexual.

4 - Predominantly homosexual behavior, but more than incidentally heterosexual behavior

5 - Predominantly homosexual behavior, only incidentally heterosexual behavior

    6 - Exclusively homosexual behavior

MEN: 11.6% of white males aged 20-35 were given a rating of 3 for this period of their lives (meaning true bisexual by behaviour).

According to the Kinsey Report, 37% of the men interviewed had a homosexual experience to orgasm and 10% had significant homosexual experience over a 3 year period of their life.

"The reports also state that nearly 46% of the male subjects had "reacted" sexually to persons of both sexes in the course of their adult lives, and 37% had at least one homosexual experience. 11.6% of white males (ages 20-35) were given a rating of 3 (about equal heterosexual and homosexual experience/response) throughout their adult lives. The study also reported that 10% of American males surveyed were "more or less exclusively homosexual for at least three years between the ages of 16 and 55" (in the 5 to 6 range).

WOMEN: 7% of single females aged 20-35 and 4% of previously married females aged 20-35 were given a rating of 3 for this period of their lives. 2% to 6% of females, aged 20-35, were given a rating of 5 and 1% to 3% of unmarried females aged 20-35 were rated as 6.

Nearly 10% of Self-Proclaimed 'Straight' Men Only Have Sex With Men

    Sept. 18, 2006 --

Nearly one in 10 men who say they're straight have sex only with other men, a New York City survey finds.

And 70% of those straight-identified men having sex with men are married.

In fact, 10% of all married men in this survey report same-sex behavior during the past year.

See URL below for the remainder of the article.

Ignore the answers here that don't cite their sources (ie bootitgo... ). Someone who makes what is purportedly scientific criticisms should at the very least post some verifiable references/cites/URLs wouldn't you think? Read my cites or check out the book itself. It explains how the people interviewed were random...

I don't know of any similar studies that have been done in Japan...

This is a question where the answers always present with massive variation.

Going by how many people I have on facebook who I went to school with, I would say about 1 in 25-30. I am gay so I would be surprised if gay people did not accept my friend requests on the grounds of sexuality. Homosexuality is much less taboo than it was 12 years ago when I was at school, but in the last 12 years I have not noticed an explosion in the numbers of gay people. Therefore I think to suggest 1 in 10 people are gay and some is a bit unrealistic. There are not that many gay people in the closet. In most regions developed countries its not easy to completely hide your sexuality, (although some people might).

On the contary in some parts of America estimates have been as low as 1 in 100. Although these estimates were based on data which is probably now outdated, in States like Missisippi where 'sodomy' was illegal until around 10 years ago, the mark as still been left and it may still be taboo to come out the closet. The more confident homosexuals from this area are quite likely to want to move to a more tolerant area such as San Francisco or Florida Keys.

There are pockets in the United Kingdom (Just as in the U.S.A.) where there are greater concentrations of gay people. Brighton is often referred to as the 'Gay capitial' and in Brighton as many as 1 in 5 people are gay. The number of gay people is also high in central London and a moderely high gay population in Manchester. As a result some gay people move to places like these, making the gay population in other areas slighly lower. Someone in my school year who is gay moved to Manchester, and another moved to Brighton. I moved to a different area too, but I did this for my job and not for the gay scene. I also know gay people who remained living in my hometown.

in most populations gays only make up 1-3% of the population. the 10% myth was created by misrepresentation of the " research " on one Dr. Kinsey who interviewed sex offenders in jail and recorded that 10 % of them were admitted homosexuals. His research was then passed on to the general public as meaning that 10% of the population was gay when all he really documented was that 10% of sex offenders were admitted homosexuals. . This misrepresentation has been repeated over and over until people accept it as " fact" when in actuality the numbers are WAY lower in most cities. The only exceptions to this rule are some of the major population centers , usually port cities, where gays have a tendency to cluster.

polls show 10% of people are openly gay

there's simply no way of knowing.

there are far too many factors that would complicate any kind of poll; i.e., whether the person is closeted.

  • overall, about 10 (out of the closets), idk about japan though.

it depends, though. in san fran, it'd be 15, and in the castro neighborhood of san fran, 41, while in the middle east it'll prolly be less.
