Cylinder problem Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I have a 2004 4.0 Sport Jeep Grand Cherokee which I had LPG converted two years ago.

At kast years service they said we had a very minor coolant hose leak which we should get looked at but no rush. This meant we had to top up the coolant every couple of months and we had the odd patch but otherwise ok. As you can imagine we never got round to getting this looked at.

Anyhoo, the car was due to be serviced this weekend. Last night on the way home from work it overheated and we pulled over. We topped up the coolant which was empty, let the engine cool down and then started agin. The car overheated a couple of miles later. We got towed to the garage and they looked at it today.

Car starts but overheats. They advise that liquid is pouring out of the cylinder head and that to remove the head and gaskets will cost around £3000-4000 and 'that's without really knowing what the problem is'!! They quoted £700 just for a new head gasket.

The car is less than 5 years old with 50k miles. Can this be right?????

The 4.0 has to be one of the easiest heads to remove. There really isn't THAT much work to it. Get a 2nd estimate, but just from experience get a new exhaust manifold and gasket set while the head is already off.

If the coolant ran low too many times then its not uncommon for the head gasket to be bad. have the head sent out to be checked to see if it is straight and have it cleaned.

sounds to me like someones pulling your chain !

There`s nothing complicated or difficult about removing a Jeep cylinder head. As for a gasket costing £700....no way!!!!.

The whole job can be done in less than a day in a properly equipped workshop,so £3000 to £4000,... you could buy another Jeep for that !

Source(s): I was qouted £400 to replace the water pump on my Cherokee. My local independant did it for £150 INCLUDING the replacement (pattern)pump !

It does cost a lot to replace head gaskets because of all the work to get to them. They also may need to resurface the heads or buy new ones. I say do it yourself if you know anything about it. I dont think the head gasket just itself would cost $700. Maybe the heads would, but not the gasket.

no longer the final high quality autos, so a situation like this at 5 years outdated is surely accessible. before everything, the storage did say you will desire to get the subject appeared at - neglecting this fault is going to value you dearly. Secondly, £3,000-£4,000 is ridiculous: you are able to desire to locate a greater sturdy storage - use Which? close by's web site in case you won't be able to get an outstanding own suggestion for an self sustaining storage. In good subject at that mileage, your vehicle's purely nicely worth a optimal of £4,000 so spending over £a million,000 in this restore would advise which you're greater suitable off merchandising the vehicle 'as is' for spares on Ebay or comparable. i'd definitely anticipate the paintings to value £500 all in.
