Impact of Cricket on international politics, Question 2, the Sydney connection?

Friends,

My question is :

How deeply have international relations, between the common people, suffered following the Sydney test match.

On having a conversation with an Indian colleague here, I was informed that this could have increased following the acrimonious relationship between India and Australia wrt cricket. Although, apparently laughable, I couldnt completely disregard his point given the goings on in this section on a daily basis.

It is also well know that there were very strong feelings between the cricket fans, for example a sample question "those days":

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200801...

On closer inspection I did find that violence against Indian students are on the rise in Australia. Ref on increasing hostilitiies, mentioned here ‘lets go curry bashing’: http://www.sindhtoday.net/news/1/15191.htm)

This may simply be because more Indians are going there, Australia apparently has become attractive to Indians, so the number of cases could be amplified ? :

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/blnus/14111591...

However, some Indian people living in Australia still seem to have strong views about their adopted nation (read comments)

http://www.indianexpress.com/comments/petrol-bomb-...

To be fair, the racial allegations made by the Indians (http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Titl... is contrary to what the Australian police (Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Keiran Walshe ) have to say:

http://www.theage.com.au/national/india-fury-on-st...

Do you believe that the relations between Indians in Australia have worsened after the Sydney test match?

I have a hard time believing the racism in Australia (because I have great professional colleagues from that country), however, it is likely my greater interactions with the highly educated and skilled professionals (and extremely amiable I must add) .....and limited interactions with the hoi polloi may be the reason for my rosy view?

Thanks

Rehman

Firstly, the brutal attacks on Indian's is very shocking indeed and hope the government does something in this regard.

one must admit that it is not only in Australia, but many other countries like US and UK have seen such attacks in the recent years.

I feel that the Growth that India and Indians r seeing today in the Global Level might be the reason. there is a huge hatred for Indians among the Americans as they feel that their jobs r being outsourced to places like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai etc...and also Individual Indians across the world r growing richer day by day.. and India today is considered to be one among the best developing nations in the world.

Sydney test match was just immoral cricket played almost two years ago,& i don't think it could be the reason for hatred among the australians as many aussies themselves believe that it was not fair

but i was shocked to see some anti-indian and anti-australian users here who spread the venom...., there r people like them everywhere in the world and these people deserve punishment.

Lets not Term Australia as a Racist Country...., coz it is one of the most wonderful countries to live in.

Every society has a racism is some form or the other. In normal times things are cool and everyone looks that way. When a minority population increases there is some form of it. Now add isolated incidents like the Sydney debacle - it escalates to common people.

Australia is not restricted to this, it has much more issues when it comes to such incidents. 2 factors play a big role - differences in communications and when minority are getting superior jobs than locals. Hence community involvement and education is critical to any such incidents.

Australia for the last 2 years or so is in the media for racism issues. Over a long time they have been in the news for the treatment of aborigines. That is no secret about it - just as the blacks were treated in US. There were many incidents where a certain sect of people were attacked ruthlessly on the beaches. I believe it was on Lebanese community. Similarly many innocent muslims were targeted in US as well for so long since 9/11. In 1980s in US even the Indians were targeted in Jersey city and they were called with derogatory word "Dor busters". The gangs used to attack innocent Indians who would steal the jewelry.

When incidents such as Sydney happen, it adds fuel to fire. So Indian communities and other minority communities have to address this issue and educate the culture.

I hope in this 21st century rather than looking at the color of people or religion - all need to change by adjusting within the means with local societies. It is high time that all societies try to live together in peace and harmony.

The Sydney Test only proves one thing.

That the use of a referral system should be permanently introduced and is long overdue. If it was in place in Sydney, none of this crap would have even started. The technology is there and as soon as the purists accept it as part of the game, the better.

Edit. Are some people under the impression that only Indians are getting mugged? Muggings happen every day in every country. Just like racism. And you would be naive to think otherwise.

I can't believe there is racism in Australia. I have at least 5 cousins residing there and I have only heard nice words about the country, from them. What's happening there now can't be compared to the violence against the blacks in Philadelphia and Chicago in the 60s and 70s. these are isolated incidents by some desperate characters for some easy cash and should be treated that way. Blowing them out of proportion is not going to solve any problem.

I think a lot of people need to get over the Sydney test, Australia won, India lost. A couple of years before Australia lost the Ashes in similar circumstances, there is no point crying over spilt milk....

Interesting comment from one of your links...

im an Indian, born and raised in Melbourne, ive never had problems with Aussies, maybe once or twice ive had an ignorant aussie be rascist were i would stand up for my self, but thats about it. ™.9 Aussies are good people, its the immigrants that do all the crimes and racism. i can stand up for myself because i was born here and grew up in tough northern Melbourne suburbs. Most of the rascism and crime came from the islanders (New Zealand Maori, Samoans), Iraqis, and now the new fleet of refugees, sudanese. indian students come across vulnerable as they are ignorant but most learn as they start living here. ignorant n the sense of country culture wise. also the students here are more into making money then studying leading to really pushy and sales deceiving jobs such telemarketing and door to door selling, which adds more to the indian stereotype

I don't necessarily agree with his comments but it is an interesting argument.

Rehman Bhai, these attacks are racially motivated. When the gang approaches an Indian boy, they ask, "Do you have a cigarette?", typically, majority of Indians do not indulge in smoking. The boy is then asked, "why do you come here?" and is then told to "go back". Now tell me this, is this not racially motivated? Why are they being told to "go back" ? Baljinder Singh, was going to give them his wallet and he bent down to grab his wallet out of his bag, he begged them to spare his life and not harm him, they laughed and told him to "piss off back to India". This is not racially motivated? I find it quite ironic how only Indians are being targeted.

They come here to pursue their studies, their parents worked so hard to fund their education, and then the students juggle their studies and work on 2 jobs to be able to pay FULL FEES. If they are studying in top ranked universities like University of Melbourne or Monash, they are paying around $10K per semester, depending on their course.

I am not going to generalise an entire nation on the basis of an handful of idiots. But, Australians have trouble accepting our culture, values, religion and customs. Why should one conform to be able to live happily in a different country?

Incidents such as Sydney test just provoke anger torwards each other. This cricket section is an excellent example, before Sydney peace was here. Everyone read each others opinions and accepted them. Now, Indians say Australia cheated, Australians say Indian player called our player a monkey, the Indian will defend by attacking, the Australian does the same. Then this whole matter becomes a messy circle, going round round round.

So I am going to utilize this answer to convey to everyone in this section. We are all equally responsible for the condition of this section and as a member of this community is it our duty to make this place better and restore the same peace and love which was here some years ago. We should not answer their questions, as it gives them attention and promotes them more. Just ignore and post a cricket question.

    Khuda Hafiz Bhai.

I live in Australia, and it's a very multicultural country, i myself am of part Sri Lankan background, i was born and raised in Australia.

I know that there is quite a big Sri Lankan community here in Australia.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lankan_Australian

But, why aren't they being targetted?

Indians...There is a MASSIVE population of Indians living here in Australia. If i leave the house to go to the shops or whatever i guaruntee i will come across an Indian. Now I think that's great, it's really nice to see that there are so many Indians calling Australia their home.

Now, why are they being targetted?

There are reasons, which i don't want to state on here as i'm quite certain it will start another World War.

While i am disgusted with the behaviour against Indians there are reasons why Indians in particular are being targetted, they are the wrong reasons to be abusing Indians, but there are certain reasons why this is happening which i don't feel i can state on here.

Overall, I've lived in Australia my whole life and I've never been racially abused in any way, and I've never come across it. Racism isn't common in Australia, Australia like i said before is a multicultural country. Now while i can't lie and say that incidents like this don't happen, i can say that they happen in every country and it's something that happens all over the world. The reason you're hearing about these incidents in the paper is because they don't commonly happen.

For me, i feel it's quite ridiculous to see Indians hating on Australia and it's people when so MANY of them live and call Australia their home.

    EDIT: MBTM

I'm by no means spewing 'venom against innocent Indian immigrants'. For my parents may not be Indian but they are immigrants.

I can not state any reasons as to why i think Indians are being targetted as this section does not obtain the maturity needed to discuss touchy issues like this. I do not have anything against Indian immigrants, i apologize if my answer appears in a racist manner, it's not intended.

on a big picture of countries , i don't think a small cricket match or a website is the reason of such violence, it is more of community targetting due to vocational insecurity and to stop the ingress of smarter immigrants who are given priority due to their dedication, hard work and brains for any employment. There is a gang of aussie prides who have an agenda of bashing immigrants on top priority , these people hide behind a simple excuse for any bashing, that is "adapt or go back", any real cosmopolitan country accomodates all religions, races and colors without any constraints.

Mel, if you dare not speak up the reasons then you shouldn't spew venom against innocent Indian immigrants. you seem to be doing sychophancy and nothing more in your answer .

Australian federal police, media and govt are making it tough for their big hyped education industry and employers to get indians working for them. Lets put it this way , indian media, govt and ministry of external affairs is up to it , either the violence will be suppressed by aus federal police or the flow of immigrants will stop. they have to choose , what they want as a future of their education and vocational industry. Indians will go to a better country like Canada instead of Aus. The cream already goes to better countries , it is only the IIIrd rate students whose parents can buy education in a first world country go to Aus and there is no reason one will pay big money for getting racially bashed . This seems to be the end of aussie education industry if measures are not taken and all aussie prides are not put back into slots.

any kind of violence towards anyone is washed off with a simple general and vague excuse that they are trying to impart their culture on us, how can an immigrant impact the backard culture of a country , where history shows genocide, apartheid etc etc. so they should stop hiding behind excuses for racial advancements. every smart and brainy person appears to be tosser and haughty like me because we can't do sycophancy and lift the balls of whites, we rely on our capabilities and live with pride and self esteem, our new generation doesn't have a habit of accepting any kind of bullying anymore !

we are not labenese who will remain silent after accepting any kind of violence, we understand that they are coward people but are merely taking advantage of being in their homeland however i feel they are timid outside their own country , i ponder if they have guts to bash any indian anywhere else than australia but we will seize this misuse of being in home country for racial assaults and finally we shouldn't be blamed again to bully our way through as usual lol !

    god bless~

Indian or no indian i wouldnt think twice about beating guys like MBTM to a pulp. We thrive on making obnoxious weeds like him bleed.

As mel has rightly pointed out that the few isolated incidents of attack on indians are not racially motivited. Its simply because of bad and high caste pompous attitude of some. Some of them have total disregard for our ethics, customs, culture and laws. They should realise than in australia you cant break laws and go scott free by bribing the cops like in india. Those are the sort of people who gets beaten up in all parts of the world without exception.

Besides indians we also have sri lankans, chinese, japanese, koreans and even people from malaysia, thailand living in Australia. We get along with them just fine. Why not indians? go figure. I speak from a true aussie standpoint and dont simply make one sided assumptions.

If indians dont refrain from being arrogant tossers they will keep getting it from us. It bugs me how people from other asian countries blend in nicely into our culture but indians try to forcefully impart their backward culture upon us.
