Do you remember the vents in the old cars?

I remember when I was young the cars had vents in the windows in the front seat. What ever happened to those? Why don't they make them anymore? How would I get some for my car? I sure wish one of the car manufacturers would bring them back.

Update:

My husband said they were called VC Windows. I sure miss them.

I was talking about that the other day. I really thought it was a great feature in cars. I wish they would bring it back too!

They're still in my old cars.

I think more than anything, they were there because technology in those days required the window to be Straight cut on leading and trailing edges to run in the tracks, leading edge track at least, on hard tops, to stabilize the window. If you'll remember, the first ones without that track were not very stable and in fact almost impossible to roll up properly while going down the highway. This straight leading edge left a triangular space that needed filling and a vent window was a good choice. Most people in my area, when I was young, referred to them as wing windows.

I remember those vent windows that I miss so much. I also remember the vents for the inside of the car. The original vents worked, unlike today. Today vent means recirculating the inside air, not exchanging it for outside air. But those vent windows was the best invention for the automobile.

They don't make them anymore in order to cut cost in the production of the car. To bad there is no after market kits one could buy.

The wing windows went away because of manufacturing costs. It is cheaper to manufacture one piece of glass than two. But I sure miss them. The last ones i had were on my American Land Yacht a 77 Chrysler New Yorker. Love that car.

They stopped installing vent windows mainly because it was cheaper to build. They same as putting a little do-nut spare tire in the trunk. It saves the manufacturers money. I miss them also. I even had an old Ford truck that had the cowl vent in it. Sure let a lot of air in!

I do remember them, I was thinking about them yesterday, I don't like the AC and the "Vent" windows would give Just the right air flow I think.

    Have a great day.

They generally disappeared in the models of the late sixties and early seventies. I thought you were going to talk about the ones that popped up on earlier models between the hood and the bottom of the windshield.

Ever ridden in a rumble seat - that was air conditioning.

I was thinking about that very thing today, you could flip your ashes out the window without them blowing back in your face. Don't know why they stopped making them, some beancounter probably figured they could save a little money by eliminating them.

In the UK they were called `Quarter-lights' for some reason.

I liked them because the air could be directed to where you wanted it.

Nowadays back seat passengers complain when you open your window.

  • They were great, you could direct air onto the windshield like a demister, onto your face if you were hot and if you opened them just a little they would suck out your cigarette ash. Here they were called vent windows.
