No it's not OK. It is certainly wrong, and depending on where you live, it may be illegal.

You should also know that using a link with no security lets everyone else read all your traffic, including passwords and account numbers.

All around, it's a very bad idea.

Some people do not mind sharing the internet, as long as you are not playing xbox 360 or download from a p2 network they wont even notice. Its like watching a sun setting over your neighbors house Not stealing a car which has physical value. Note that very few ISPs do charge based on usage but it is very few and far in between. They are most likly not beign charged any more or any less from you useing it. and yes if some one wanted with the right skills and knowledge they could exploit anyhtign that is not encoded in https or ssl.

Essentially you are connecting to someone else's network without their permission or knowledge. While you may get free internet access that way, you are doing it on someone else's bill. That is not morally correct if you are in a home environment.

There are some environments where this is allowed and encouraged, however. For example, many libraries in colleges and other places provide free wi-fi. Many airports and hotels provide wi-fi for a fee or for free, depending on the location. If the location allows one to connect to their wi-fi network, this is acceptable. Often in places where this is permitted, you will see it promoted or advertised by the facility.

It is illegal, unethical, and stealing.

Depending upon where you live, it can be a felony.

I fail to understand why people believe an unsecure network is a network for public use. A parallel to this reasoning is that it is ok to take a car if it is unlocked and the keys are in it. While it is foolish to leave the car unlocked with keys in it and it is equally foolish to have an unsecured wireless network this does not mean that it is OK to steal the car or help your self to the network.

As you can see there are lots of opinions on this. Talk to your neighbors about this. If they approve, its ok. If they dont, then it is not ok. And yes, in some locations hooking to an unsecured network is illegal. They probably will not come to get you unless you do something else that is illegal while you use the connection.

It is to an extent. If you have a firewall on your computer and maybe an internet security program, I would go ahead and use it. It is the owners responsibility to secure their own network, but if you don't have your computer secure, other people could access it. If both of you are using the Windows standard Workgroup instead of a domain, then everyone on that network could possibly access your files if they know how.

It is illegal to use it without the express consent of the owner, and their ISP. This is considered stealing service and can carry up to 5 years in prison, as well as fines in the thousands. Unsecured wireless also makes all your transmissions readable, so any clear text user names, passwords, emails and sites visited become public.

Its legal to connect to any network as long as you are not BYPASSING their security by breaking passwords and so on. If its free of passwords then yes you may.

yeah you need both the DNS server and the default gateway IPs. they can be the same IP it all depends how your network is set up. Look at another computers IP configs and use the same DNS and gateway that it has

No it's not. Depending on the area you live you could be charged with a felony.
