How much time am I really sitting on an airplane?

I'm booking a flight and I notice it states my flight from Los Angeles to Toyko is average 13 - 18 hours long. Now, am physically sitting on the flight for that long or is that calculating day I'm losing? I've never traveled abroad before and I'm just figuring out how this works.

Thanks!

you should figure out how many time zones inbetween you and tokyo..but if you are going backwards....you would be gaining a day i believe but then you would still be on the plane for about 18 hours...cause from texas to hawaii its 12 hours or more...

    so 18 sounds right...

get up and walk the isles. lol

It will depend on the winds. If they are pushing you, you will be there quicker. If not, it will take longer. Your landing time should be in local time (Tokyo).

You just need to subtract (or add) with toyko times.
