why are we the way we are.?
i have not been a member of answers very long but i have noticed that many questions that are asked seem to try and belittle my christian faith. i know that my faith is a thorn in the side of many people. truth be known we are the main reason for some of the debates in our country today. we are the front runners for pro-life and ban on gay marriage, not to mentioned many other topics. i also realize that many people would like to see us gone. trust me we would to. i have 2 questions the 1st is have you ever sit down and really tried to understand why we believe the way that we do. not by tv movies or a professor. but have you ever sat down and read our bible to see why we believe this way. i know that someone will ask have i ever sat down and tried to see your point. the answer is yes. i understand about the freedom of a human to choose. it is a basic american right. even though i love may country and all the men and women who has fought for it i am a christian 1st and an american 2nd. my 2n ? is this. since stephan by some estimates more than 1 billion christians have been put to death. govements hate us, the people of the world want to see us gone and yet we are still here and growing. even in america if and when the time ever comes that we have to choose between our faith and our life many will turn away but many will happily choose our faith. with all that our faith has gone through why do you beleive we will ever back down and keep our mouths shut about the things that we find so immoral.
everybody thinks of christians as being cathloics. i am an evangleical. it is a huge difference than being catholic. the crusades was conducted by the cath. church. and yes the catholic church has killed many people jews and not to mentioned christians who like my self did not go along with their churches soverity. so please, even though i have many catholic friends, do not associate all christians with catholic.
mikez i never said it bothered me that that people hate it. all is well- what problem i have no problem. i beleive in what i beleive i know that people do good things both christian and non but we are an evil species holly-where did i say it was light and sweet. sion-what

Here is a good idea: believe what you want to believe and leave everyone else alone to believe what they believe. Trust me---no one is particularly interested in what you believe or why. Just quietly do what is right for you and everyone else will do the same.
More religious people have waged war, killed millions of innocent people and fouled entire civilizations thinking they "fought for what they believe is moral." Read up on the history, missy. Religion is not all light and sweetness that you seem to think it is. Read up on what the Lutherans did in Great Brittan. Remember the Holocaust? The Nazi's truly thought that murdering millions of Jews was a wonderful thing. The protestant and catholic nonsense is still going on in Ireland. Look at America and the middle east even as we speak. Wake up. Grow up. Shut up.

You might not believe it, but I think I have a very clear understanding of why you believe what you do. It has nothing to do with what any professor told me, or any book I read. I just payed attention to the church goers around me as I was growing up. It's simple psychology. I understand too well the sort of high feeling you get from loudly proclaiming something to be immoral and how you believe that your pleasing God. How good that must feel to you. I understand the connection you believe you feel with God.
It really seems that you will never understand why you believe what you do. I've made peace with that though. I'm not an activist. I don't care a great deal about gay rights or abortion laws. Even if the laws changed, it would have no effect on me. Be my guest, march up and down everywhere making peoples' lives a little less pleasurable, all the while believing that you'll have an eternity at death that doesn't even exist. Waste your time being the thorn, when you could be a source of cheer in this short short short existence. Then you'll yell "persecution!" when others want rid of you. You were a pain, but then you were "persecuted." You people like to claim that the majority don't like followers of God and that you'll be persecuted, but it has nothing to do with whether you believe in God, it's the asinine stunts you people try to pull. Instead of trying to change the laws why don't you just keep your "morals" to yourself. If they're really that great and if they really lead to overall happiness, then others will adopt them.
From my perspective, I think the most healthy thing to do is laugh it off. Here we are, hurling through space, posturing with each other when we could both be doing something else. We're both wasting our time. I have no problem with your belief in God.

I Billion is the epitome of exaggeration
Your not the only religion that has been persecuted over the many generations. Thousands right now in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan are being murdered because of what they believe.
Deceived, disobedient, hate filled, vengeful, ill-informed, brainwashed, Christians raised their fists in delusional anger when the twin towers were struck, yelling go get them bas----.
Those people had nothing to do with it, but what do you care, as long as you can wipe out anyone living a more holy life than yourselves.
Then bring in your phony hypocrite religion, put women in mini skirts, strapless tops and shaved heads, with plastered make up, died hair, stiletto heal shoes, and their prime-dona attitudes .
Then teach and encourage girls to date, leave home, get a job, and be more like a man than what God created then to be.
To bring in your wicked pagan holidays, your magic oriented Disney movies, and your talking animal figures.
You encourage young girls go before the world in nothing but a bathing suit, open their legs before the entire world in gymnastics, then try to tell the world that you are a Godly Holly people.
You make me puke

1. Yes I have. I have many deeply religious people in my family and my circle of friends. Frankly I couldn't care if you were devil worshipers, I know a few people who are. Nice folks. But Christianity is not the only religion I have explored.
2. You do understand that Christians were responsible for countless deaths. Crusades any one? Besides not only Christians are put to death. And if a Christian has committed a crime the law is going to persecute them regardless of religious choice.

Yes I have read the bible and I have studied it. The reason we are a thorn in the side of many people is because we listen to Jesus and follow Him and this upsets Satan.
People hate us because they hate Jesus. Jesus told us the world will hate us because of Him. We are children of Jesus they are children of Satan and that's why they hate us.
Satan is deceiving those who follow him. There are many people who say they are Christians and following Jesus but in reality are really following Satan instead.

Try NOT following a religion that damns every single human being that is different than the norm. Try following a religion that does NOT entice discrimination like your religion does. Try following a religion that does NOT teach that good people who are not "christian" will burn in a supposed non-existent "hell" for eternity. Try following a religion that has NOT caused mass murders in history. Try following a religion that does NOT teach that humans are worthless "sinners" worthy of burning for eternity. Then maybe, you won't have that problem. : )

First of all why do you so arrogantly assume that you are speaking for all Christianity? Fortunately not all Christian churches are as bigoted and irrational as some. Many Christian churches DO permit abortiion under certain circumstances and many also endorse gay marriage.
Of course your insistance that Catholicsm has not been the forerunner Christian faith that history proclaims so overwhelmingly, you probably so arrogantly assume that YOUR determination of what constitutes "true Christianity" is the one infallible one.
You stated the following: "i know that my faith is a thorn in the side of many people."
The problem many people have with certain "Christians" is NOT that their "faith" is a "thorn" but their total inability to give to others the SAME respect for differing beliefs as they demand for themselves, and their arrogant assumption that our secular society must follow their religious views when formulating laws and deciding issues which affect profoundly the civil rights of others.
You add: "we are the front runners for pro-life and ban on gay marriage, . . ."
EXACTLY what i am talking about. You assume automatically that you have the right to determine that other people only deserve the rights that YOU so arrogantly assume that you ALONE should determine according to your assumed infallible religious views.
I would NOT like to see you "gone." But what i would like to see gone is your arrogant assumption that you have the right to limit other's civil rights -- civil rights you automatically claim for yourselves.
It would not be so bad IF your Christian stands on such "controversial" positions have historically been proven to be on the side of moral rectitude. For 1000 years your arrogant leaders had firmly taught that to lend money at interest was IMMORAL. For 1800 years your arrogant leaders had determined that slavery was perfectly permissible. For even longer your arrogant leaders had expressed the view that women should indeed have only very limited rights.
With this horrendous track record just why should any sane person still be listening?
Even in the area of sexual morality your Christian faith has made MAJOR changes in regard to what is considered "moral sexual activity."
You asked: ". . .have you ever sit down and really tried to understand why we believe the way that we do."
YES. I have. I have studied the moral arguments and Biblical interpretations given by many of your "churches and theologians."
Your moral stands on these so-called "controversial issues" are ambiguous at best. And I can NOT believe them. Or accept them. They are non-persuasive to anyone with a modicum of intelligence and rational reflection. (I am thankful that your Christian church no longer has the authority to execute 'heretics' as they so commonly did in past centuries).
And YES I HAVE studied the Bible. It is replete with contradictions as to both content and theology. And promotes behavior both irrational and IMMORAL And contrary to what you no doubt profess, it is impossible to follow in its entirety simply for the reason that its "teachings" are so absolutely irrational and self contradictory.
You continue: "i understand about the freedom of a human to choose. it is a basic american right"
What you seem to fail to acknowledge is that people who believe differently from you ALSO should enjoy the SAME rights they enjoy themselves. NO ONE should have the right to limit the just civil rights of another.
FIRST acknowledge MY right to believe differently from you, and MY right to EXACTLY the same rights you assume for yourself and then maybe I will listen to what else you have to say.
What I find so immoral is the tremendous harm and evil your arrogant assumption of religious infallibility has already brought to so many innocent people in this country. You may believe as you will -- until that belief brings me unjust harm. That is when i will so adamantly claim that NO you do NOT have the right to bring so much pain and suffering to innocent people.
You pretend to claim that your are divorced from "Historical" Christianity, but you are merely the splintered remnant of a totalitarian belief system which is intent on STILL bringing unreasoned bigotry and untold harm to many innocent people.
Admit that those of us who believe differently from you have the SAME rights as you do and then I might believe your protestations of "innocence."
Fortunately history has ALREADY proven that soon your current bigotry and irrational views of "morality" WILL be gone. As society's understanding of TRUE morality gradually forces orthodoxy to give way to justice, your current concepts of "right" will soon pass away.
We will all eventually acknowledge -- even your most hard-hearted protestators -- that women DO have some rights even to the extent that YES abortion is NOT universally wrong. And even now we as a society are coming to the understanding that YES, gay people too have the same civil rights of others and to enjoy the right to marry the one they would love is one of them.
You so naively assume that "choosing" your faith is the same "choise" now as it was in the past. PLEASE do some reading of history. Even your own Christian history. It is NOT you or your "religion" we want to see "gone." Only your determined ignorance, irrationality, dismissal of historical fact, and arrogant assumption of moral infallibility. And of course all the tremendous harm and injustice you seem so intent on inflicting on our country.
