nissan 300zx oil leak?

hi i own a 1986 nissan 300zx. It has a small oil leak and i am hoping it is just the oil filter. there is one small pool directly under the engine and another under the middle of the car about 2 and a half feet back. the second one is larger, and im guessing its because the leaked oil is running along the lines under the car then dripping down. I can tell that both spots are definitely oil by the smell. any help would be great. thanks.

Update:

stupid question cuz i dont know a ton about cars...but when you say oil filter gasket thats not the same as the head gasket is it?

the oil filter gasket is not the same as the head gasket the head gasket

is on top of the motor and the oil filter is near the bottom of the engine

oil filters should be installed by hand and torqued down no more than 15 ft pounds that's tight and a 1/4 turn more you should with a grip be able to unscrew the oil filter without a oil filter wrench if it to tight the gasket

split and has to be replaced with a new oil filter

you could have an oil leak there at that filter or the valve cover gasket

head gasket oil pan gasket front main seal or rear main seal if the motor is clean should be easy to see were the oil is coming from if the motor is dirty take it to one of those car washing places and pressure wash the motor if you pressure wash the motor it need to be running

at a high rpm if your not sure you can have a detail shop pressure wash the motor which is the better cost were i live in Seattle is around 100 bucks the best suggestion we can give is to get a bright flashlight

check the valve cover head gasket and under the car oil filter and oil pan gaskets if it is coming from the rear of the oil pan it could be the oil pan gasket or rear main seal which is not a repair you could do

it will require removal of the oil pan, keep in mind to that if your motor is dirty you could have more than one leak and it can just be dripping oil off the frames rails to the ground.

also keep in mind that if your dripping oil you should also regularly check the oil level once it all drips out you got no oil you also will be buying a new motor cause yours seized from lack of oil so keep checking oil level once or twice a week until you get it fixed that way you can figure out how much oil your loosing from week to week and fill accordingly

    Hope that helps

Get some old rags and a can of carborator cleaner. Clean up all the oil thats leaked out as best you can. Start up engine and look for the source of your leak.

I see lots of loose valve cover bolts passengers side you can tighten all of them drivers side is much more difficult. And yes the oil eventually finds its way into the oil pressure switch/sender connector.
