reasons for failing
1. main reason is abraham lincoln was killed - he was the leader of the union and his spirit to rightfully preserve the union was killed along with him
2. andrew johnson quickly pardoned the southerners that had left the union. while republicans wanted to make the south pay and wanted to keep them out of office johnson pardoned most of them and let a lot of the southeners back into office. which means a lot of the people that fought against the union were back in charge of it.
the reconstruction era was about 'reconstructing' the problems that the union had but because of the way the southerners were just allowed back into the union and into office, the progress that had been made was all useless.
sorry, im not sure about its failed promises but these were reasons why it failed.
