How to get help with 3 year olds speech apraxia? Getting the brush off!?

My 3 year old Nephew is so hard to understand that we joke about his "foreign language". But less and less, by 3 he should say more than 2 word sentences and be understandable at least 1/2 the time. He is aware we don't understand him and it frustrates him. He will say a word, we repeat what he said, but he says "no" then says the same thing again, so we start guessing similar words. Birth to 3 said to wait, even the pediatrician said wait, he will develop in his own time. Hogwash! All my reading says to wait is to doom him to take this into grade school.

Please suggest where to go next? Should we just be more insistent?

Live in North central Connecticut, near Springfield, Mass.

Update:

Thank you all so much for the information!

    Dear user,

You are absolutely right, the child needs early intervention if by 3 his speech is intelligible.

Your child needs to be evaluated through the Conneticut Birth to three program available through the school system. This is a FREE service. They will give him a complete evaluation and then they will costume made an education plan for him,. This is called an IEP (individualized Educational plan)

Since the child is already 3, he qualifies for Developmental Pre-school and will received speech therapy services in a educational setting. Transportation is provided by the state.

I'm glad that You re pro-active in your nephew's education. Most parents are en denial and Dr's will give you the "all kids develop at their own pace" bull crap. Kids need to be ready for kindergarten and some need just a little encouragement to develop speech. They will also evaluate his hearing to make sure this is not causing the speech delay.

Take him to a speech therapist and get you a new pediatrician. This one is crazy and has no idea what he is talking about! My 2 year old daughter says a million sentences. As a matter of fact, if they can't say more that 2 2 word sentences by 2 1/2 they need therapy!

We told the doctor we were worried and they sent us to a speech pathologist. While she wrote down all the words and sounds he couldn't make, they actually did very little to help, it was more of case of noting his problems.

I know what you mean about their frustration, my own child is six and we still have this problem, more and more people can understand him now, but he is old enough to substitue words when he isn't making himself understood.

A month ago he was driving himself nuts saying he didn't have any "finamun seeds" and failing to get us to understand, we quizzed and cross examined him on what they were, he said they were round, they were pink and orange, they weren't sweets and he had them after dinner......Fin-a-mun seeds were Vit-a-min C's !!! He was saying he'd run out of vitamins.

We also found out this year that he has a significant hearing loss in one ear, this may be the cause, he passed all his tests 100% as a baby but in school he failed both his hearing tests, we had no clue he had any hearing problems and he was to young to tell us.

Ask for a referral to audiology to check that as a cause.

Now that he is 3 by federal law the school district where he lives must provide a full evaluation and any services he is shown to need. Contact the Special Education office in the school district and ask where to register him to begin the process, and don't let them bully his parents into waiting.

touch the Shriners close to you to work out what they propose. Treating speech and listening to issues are part of their project. additionally, touch interior sight universities to work out in the event that they have a speech and listening to medical institution; many furnish in-intensity screenings at little or no value. stable success to you and your loved ones.
