Senior citizens, what was your high school prom like, and what is your fondest memory of that night?

Tonight is my senior prom, and as a member of the planning committee, I’ve devoted a lot of time the past few months to researching the current trends and themes, but it would be lovely to learn more about how previous generations celebrated the milestone event.

~ When was your prom, and what were the popular traditions at that time?

~ Where was it held?

~ What did everyone wear?

~ Did you have a Pre-Prom dinner and After-Prom celebrations, or was the prom the singular event of the evening?

~ Did your school use the prom as an opportunity to promote and support a cause you believed in? For example, the motivation for our theme and décor is “green peace,” and we have endeavored to be environmentally responsible, and to use the event as a way to give back to the community. 20% of the ticket sales are being donated to locally-based humanitarian organizations; all leftover art supplies and set decorations will be given to an inner-city children’s center; the unused extra trays of food will be delivered immediately after the prom to local food banks; and tomorrow afternoon we’re delivering all the floral arrangements to various nursing homes in the city. If you are interested in reading more about our efforts or gathering resources for an event you may be planning, please click here: http://skylarkmelody.xanga.com/

~ Do you remember the theme of your prom? In keeping with our theme of “green peace,” ours is “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and we are decorating the ballroom to look like the Emerald City.

~ What music was played? Did you have a DJ or a live band?

~ Was there a Prom Court with a Prom Queen and King crowned at the event?

~ Was the prom in any way shaped by the political and economic climate and world events at that time? For example, due to the economic crisis, many schools this year have scaled back on the extravagance of the event and brainstormed ways to be thrifty.

And most importantly, what are the fondest memories of your prom, and what advice would you give to us so that when we look back on this night we will remember it as a joyous moment in our lives?

Oh, and if any of my adult contacts happen to be reading this, feel free to answer the question even if you are not yet a senior citizen.

Apologies for the length of the question; my curiosity went into overdrive. And thanks in advance for your answers. : )

Update:

I absolutely loved so many of the answers here, and I'm grateful you took the time to share your lovely memories. Thank you all. My prom was beyond awesome, by the way, and I am sure that I will one day look back on it as one of the happiest moments of my adolescence. : )

I think that proms are more organized than when I went to mine.

There was no need for a theme. I am curious as to why there should

be. I graduated in 1961. And we had our dance at the downtown

Masonic Temple. We had live entertainment by the late comedian and

actor Jim Backus. There was a young female singer, whose name I

forget now. But her popularity had waned. She sang some songs and

Jim did his Mr Magoo routine and did some stand up jokes. I don't

remember if there was live music or not. But it was the only graduation

dance/prom I'd ever heard of where there was entertainment and it

was people who were known nationally. I wore a white dress with

pastel tiny flowers in a see through material that had lacy layered rows in the skirt. It was lined in pink satin. The skirt was poufy like a bell. My date was my boyfriend who'd broken up with me two weeks before the prom, and made up with me a few days before. His mother made him take me, since I had the dress and shoes and rhinestone tiara. Tiaras' were a fad worn at dressy affairs back then. Along with satin low heels which were died to match your dress.

I remember we double dated and we made up.that evening. I re-

member that he and I seemed to be the only two people around. I

don't remember the dancing, only just being close to him and making

out in the back seat of our friends' car. We both felt we were in love.

I believe we left the dance early and we went for burgers and fries

before heading home. I remember the lights at the dance had been

dimmed all evening. So it was romantic. And when we arrrived at the

restaurant to eat, the lights inside were turned up so bright, that it was

a shocking return to reality again. The magic of the evening was

dimmed at that point, but not our enthusiasm for going steady again.

After all of these many years, this is all I recall. I don't remember

the music, if there was a band or much of anything. It's been about

48 years since that event, and my memory only holds onto one thing

for that evening, and that was the college freshman I was so hung up

    over, and he for me.

~ When was your prom, and what were the popular traditions at that time?

May 26th 2004 and idk what the popular traditions were lol it's 04 not that long ago

    ~ Where was it held?

    Villa Ragusa in CA

    ~ What did everyone wear?

Tuxes some guys zoot suits (eww) and Prom dresses

~ Did you have a Pre-Prom dinner and After-Prom celebrations, or was the prom the singular event of the evening?

Singular event but they served dinner there.

~ Did your school use the prom as an opportunity to promote and support a cause you believed in? Sadly No

~ Do you remember the theme of your prom? "At last" Colors were red and gold

~ What music was played? Did you have a DJ or a live band? We had a DJ and mostly "hot music of the time" Like BS toxic In the Club etc

~ Was there a Prom Court with a Prom Queen and King crowned at the event? YES I believe these are universal

~ Was the prom in any way shaped by the political and economic climate and world events at that time? Nope

And most importantly, what are the fondest memories of your prom, and what advice would you give to us so that when we look back on this night we will remember it as a joyous moment in our lives?

Honestly I didn't like it BUT I loved dancing with my now husband hahaha. It's kind of weird to finish college in different cities(we finished school) and now have out prom picture next to our wedding picture lol. We never would have thought then that we were meant to get married. Gosh I really hope no 17 year old reads this and goes "We WILL get married" because back then that was the furthest thing on our mind but it's funny now. Oh and his dance skills improved very very much since then lol

EDIT Oops I didn't see the senior citizens part :( I had fun answering anyways lol SORRY

My prom was held in the high school library on May 4th 1955. I wore a white net strapless ankle length formal and a pink wrist corsage, he wore a suit..theme was a Midsummer's night Dream. Tickets were $4.00. Cookies and punch were served. No queen or King. I don't remember if we had a band or DJ. Music like Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White, String of Pearls, Ebb Tide were played, all popular songs of the mid 50s. No dinner before the dance, and we went to the local drive in restaurant, the local hang out, after the dance for a shake and hamburger and then cruised until 2:00 am..My curfew was extended an hour. My best remembrance of the dance is that it was my 1st date with my husband to be..and 54 years later we are still perfectly happy with each other..{married 51 of those years} Thanks for the trip down memory lane..May you remember this night with good thoughts many years from now. Have a great time..

    June 1962.w/ my HS sweetheart.

First formal "grownup" event; tuxes & gowns at a NY hotel.

    Shared a limousine w/ friends

Live band w/ 60's pop music.

Could not leave until it was over.

Saw Peter, Paul & Mary at the old Blue Angel club...gone

Staten Island ferry ride ..5 cents each.

Had $60 spending money & did not use it all

Stayed out all night & went to the beach for sunrise which was a local tradition.

    Advice .....?

My Senior prom was in June 1959.

It was held at a local hotel's main ballroom.

We wore either full length or calf length formal dresses...usually strapless...and often white. Mine was dotted swiss, strapless with a 3-tiered skirt. I wore high strapies.

I was not in a relationship at the time, and my escort was the nephew of one of my teachers. A handsome guy who I had a mild crush on.

When the time came for him to pick me up, he did not show and after a while my Dad insisted I go to the prom anyhow with HIM as my escort. He dressed up in his formal 'blues' - he was an Army Colonel, complete with his miniature medals adorning his jacket...and took me to the prom.

Shortly after arriving, my date showed up...his car has broken down and back then there were no cell phones! lol

    My Dad gracefully departed.

We did not have limos back then and usually rode in our date's car or a parent's.

Yes, we had a pre-dinner and after parties - usually at someone's house. Mine was at a friend's home where we all tried unsuccessfully to stay awake until dawn, not wanting to admit we were too pooped to pop!

[Prom night was the ONE night we had no curfew!]

Can't remember whether there was theme.

    ===============================

I also had a Jr. Prom while still attending high school in France. [graduated though in the USA]

We had a pre-dinner at a lovely French restaurant and all I remember about the dinner was the dessert....Vanilla Bean ice cream with Creme de Menthe atop! lol

Then we were transported to ballroom - live music. Our transport was an Army Bus! LOL

IN 1969, my prom was held in the basketball auditorium of my local school, Lake Worth High School (Always High). The night was HIGH CONTROL of all the students. No close dancing. No loud music. No standing outside. Music was from LP records and a 2-speaker portable stereo. The lights were always ON to keep visual control of the kids.

School Administration picked the music, too. Decorations were by one teacher-controlled committee. Again, control. My wife's prom was held in a conference room of a hotel. She went to Cardinal Newman Catholic School. The control was even tighter. You could not even hold hands.

    Source(s): Be grateful of NOW.

It was 1967 and we dressed to the nines and I was with the prettiest girl in the world. Stayed with her too, till cancer took her in 2007. I still miss my friend. My tux was dorky old shiny black with a stripe down the leg but her gown was as stunning as she was. It was mostly white with over tones of pink her hair was long and strawberry blond the jewelry accents were fake pearl. The teachers picked the music and we danced as long as they would let us. There was a six inch rule but they let her and I slide. Love has that effect on other ppl. Did I say I miss my friend.

My fondest memory was actually attending the darn thing!

My boyfriend was leaving after my graduation for one of the service academies and I was determined to go to my prom with him. He picked me up at the venue to take me to my hair appt and we were T-boned on the way there.

We hit a light post and I went partially thru the windshield while my knees got jammed in the glove box. After being treated at the ER, I went to my hairdresser, who had waited for me, and then home to dress.

I had a huge bandage on my forehead and I had the most glorious, romantic evening!

Mine was back in the fifties and all I remember was that I had a lovely white strapless dress for the first time.
